My dad's saying that it's kinda hard to steer the vehicle. I have to admit, it seems kinda stiff and needs a little effort to turn the wheel when doing turns.
I don't really know how to describe it but it seems a bit stiff compared to other cars/trucks.

Maybe I should do a power steering flush?

Is it noisy, is the fluid swirling around inside the resirvor bottle, what color is the fluid and when was it last changed?

What kind of vehicle are you comparing it to? Some power steering system provide more help than others so going from one vehicle to another you're going to notice a difference in steering feel. Discos are also heavy vehicles which makes the steering feel heavy. Like DM said, check your power steering fluid level and quality. If it's black and nasty it's time to change it. If the level is low you could have air in the system that needs to be bled out. I never thought of my Disco's steering as being unusually heavy but I have been driving pickups since I got my driver license so that's what I compare it to.

When the truck is on, it swirls around inside the bottle.
The fluid I think is black.
It was last changed... who knows honestly. I recently got the truck (few months ago)

Every time i'm making a turn + accelerating, I can hear a high pitched whine. I'm not sure why it's making that whine though or if it's relevant.

Can you also tell me why it's making that whining noise?

If the fluid is black, it needs to be flushed, go buy 4 quarts of p/s fluid and a bottle of Lucas p/s additive and I'll walk you thru how to flush it out.

You need a new serpentine belt.
Thats why it is hard to steer and making noise when turning, the belt is slipping.
But there are 2 different belts for your truck, a ACE and non ACE belt.
Look at your power steering reservoir, does it have 2 removable caps or just one?

If it has 2 then you need this belt.

It it only has one then this belt.

Make sure you route the belt correctly.

After you replace the belt if it still makes the whining noise and is hard to steer then you need to replace your belt tensioners.

I have ACE so 2 caps. I have 2 bottles of P/S/ACE fluid purchased from a dealer. I'll look for the Lucas P/S additive

Well, I'm not a mechanic. In fact, the only maintenance I know how to do is, pretty much refilling the washer fluid

Do you think I can do it myself? I would like to do it myself because being a student, It's hard for me to afford $90/hour labour.

EDIT:Also when I corner, is the ACE symbol supposed to light on? I've only seen it light on once and it was in a really hard corner
