Problem i havent found discussed?
First off i want to thank everybody for the info posted here, im a newbi to posting but not to the forums .I have owned several rovers and have got lots of info here on how to fix them, after searching for couple days,(several hours) not finding a answer to my problem thought id just ask the experts.. just bought a 2000 disco from a lady that said the head gaskets were bad? she allwas had service done at the stealership, she had the discovery in shop to replace a fuel line, they charged her over 700 bucks to do the job! the invoice said they had to remove intake, and install new gaskets, she said about 4 days later she was going down highway started smelling antifreez or somthing so she pulled over got out and coolant was running down under engine, she had it towed to rover dealership they called her next day said head gaskets were bad? she said befor this happend disco never got hot, acted funny, and always was very dependable, also said it didnt get hot when this happned she stoped on side of road soon as she smelled somthing,,,they wanted 3200 bucks to do the head gaskets so she just soild it ...the disco will start and run perfect, smooth no missing or odd noise, oil looks new, but when u put water in the resivour it runs out somewhere from the back of engine? it dont seep out, it pours out as fast as u put it in? u cant even fil the resivour because it pours out so fast? havent got under it yet to see, but cant tell from top where its coming from, the water will hit the ground at the back of engine/ bellhousing area. just wandering if thy might have left somthing loos at the back of intake,,,(as i found several things loos such as a ground strap not hooked back up,,etc.) or could it b a freez plug at rear of engine? are there any water hoses back there that can leak? i just dont think head gaskets will leak this bad! I appreicate any help or comment befor i start tearing into the engine...thanks
It could be your valley gasket is leaking. If they didn't tighten down the retainer bar across the back of the valley it could happen. I think that the head gaskets will only leak when the system is pressurized and even then I don't think they would leak that bad. You need to take the truck to an independent mechanic and have a pressure test done so you can find the problem before you make it worse. Until you find the problem stop driving it.
thanks for the info,,disco is not being driven! it wont hold water,,it can be started and run for a few minuts. but like i said soon as u put water in it runs out! as far as pressure test it wont hold pressure, its as if u took the top radiator hose off but its at the back of the engine???
One thing is for sure, that kind of leak has nothing to do with head gaskets. I am not familiar with the new discos, but if it were an older one I would say it is the A/C-heather water house that is in the back of the engine.
well just took off top of intake, pulled coilpack out of the way so i could get a good look at the whole intake, poured water in and everything is dry up here! water is comining from bottom...so i got her on the lift and water is coming out of the bellhousing??? guess ill pull the tranny next,,,also the transmisson was replaced at dealer about a month befor this problem happned....anybody heard of this befor??
The area you are talking about is where the heater core in/out hoses are at. If they were to become disconnected, then water would just flow from the "in" hose just as fast as you could fill the resevoir. That would be the very first thing I'd check. In any event, the only way that much liquid would flow out of a head gasket that quickly were if the head were not even bolted on. Even if just bolted on hand tight, it still would not gush water in that manner (and no way the truck would run).
thanks guys but the water is coming from inside the bellhousing, must be a freez plug, the heater hoses are easly seen at the top of engine like i said everything is dry on the top end...water is coming out of the hole in the bottom of bellhousing??. gona take the trans out saturday. it looks like its a brand new trans,l the paperwork says 3600 bucks for the trans and labor at the stealership!! poor lady has spent over 6 thousand bucks on this rover in the last year! i bought it from her for 1500 bucks, these dealers should be prosicutied for the way they they rip people off... they charged her 130 bucks to tow the rover to dealership..134 dollers to check head gaskets..65 bucks for some wast didposal fee? then another 130 dollers to tow it to her house wich is about 6 miles from srealership! thats almost460 bucks to tell her the head gaskest were bad? wich i think is not the problem at all????
They have to charge a waste disposal fee because they (the dealer) are charged for disposal of their waste, you cant just dump old coolant down the drain.
$65 is a rip off, $5 is more like it, hell, I used to charge $250 to haul away a 55 gal drum of waste coolant, thats $4.80 per gallon (you can only fit 52 gal into a 55 gal drum) and the average cooling system holds 2 gal...so maybe charge $15, but not $65.
Poor woman, I fell bad for her.
Anyway, sorry, as usual I am no help, just rattling on with stupid little stories.
