Turns out the lever goes in a flat slot machined on the side of the selector rod. I will post my results next week. I don't know what I was thinking......
If your current setup results in better gas mileage I want to know

If you are concerned with gas mileage, I did come across a thread where guys were modifying the diff set to operate in 2-wheel drive. I'm not a big fan of that idea but if it peaks your interest you can search keywords through Google. It could give you something to redo about 4 times, knowing your luck LmAo! JK

Hahaha! Indeed! I could do it four times on one Rover and another 4 on the other! Good to hear from you chubbs! I finally gave up on that 4.6 and put it in time out so I'm back to my tired, old, gimpy, 4.0. But it works! I've swapped engines more times than a land Rover technician with his 20 year pin.

I thought you had the rebuild whipped after you swapped con-rod and piston. What was the end result on that deal? Did you get the head-gaskets on the Excursion?

I just didn't like how it sounded and I had a weird, traveling misfire situation. I decided to yank it out and put the old geezer back in, then put the 4.6 in time out for awhile (on the stand, with a blanket over it to hide its face). I was actually looking at new cars over the situation so something had to give. 4.0 to the rescue!

Recall that I have a low threshold for rover tomfoolery and my Disco did spend a solid five years alone, in time out, in the garage when the head gaskets blew the first time. In fact, I bought a new truck the day after that happened (and I still have that truck, too). So, as you see, I have come a long way! This time I was looking at... Cars. Ugh. I just woke up one morning last week and decided that I needed to get it running right that day or it was going back in the garage.

I'm still staring at the excursion. I have the head gaskets. The head gaskets stare at me every time I walk by, as if to say "you are one lazy BASTARD!"

I agree! Thanks Dro!

Also, I am still of working age and though I am the boss I do have duties that call for me not to have oil on the backs of my arms, under my nails, and have bandages everywhere. Plus my wife throws away my overalls now instead of washing them so it can get expensive.

TO the OP sorry for the thread hijack. I haven't talked to chubbs in awhile and we are Rover cellmates.

No worries about the hi-jack lol. I cant wait to get my land rover going. I think I got a really good one. 99 with no sunroof, no ACE, and no SLS. On top of that the previous owner put on a TJM bumper, hella 400 lights, OME 2" lift, heated seat mod, cd changer, and rubber mats/ oem LR seat covers. Has some totally dry rotter bfg mt's with 90% tread. what a waste all that for $1100! so I decided that after pouring 4k into the motor ill have a solid discovery!

also I found a bolt in the AT oil pan and a loose square magnet. Is the magnet typical? the bolt scared me but I couldn't see where it comes from and figured its probably been like this for years so whatever.
