The PO was selling the truck around Thanksgiving. He also ordered some parts before the holiday in hopes to put them in before the truck got sold. Logistic nightmares and the weather at the time delayed the shipment, and when I bought the truck it did not have the new shaft installed. I did not want to take a risk on the otherwise mint car, so I promptly got a new shaft. Two days the PO showed up with a present for me.

The shaft is not of a Tom Woods variety by any means. I think it is one of those shaft sold on eBay for $108. It has zerk fitings, etc. I am keeping it as a spare, but if you're tight on $, I'll ship it to you. Let's continue via PM.

Cheap insurance is grease.
Get under there and grease the prop shafts.

Will be the smartest thing you have done for your rover instead of worrying which solves nothing.

I greased my prop shaft after I was 600 miles into a 1,200 mile trip.
I kept putting it off.

So I am in a parking lot in Ogden Utah greasing the prop shafts.
And by the time I got into WA state - not a PEEP from those prop shafts!!

The grease had worked into the bearings and it was as quiet as a mouse sneaking cheese in front of a cat.

So basically just completly paxk the joints and hipe it works into the bearings? Unfortunately this is my only car and I need to get to work, so anything that will help my chances while I wait for a shaft, I'm game for. I didn't think it would make a difference without the zerk though.

My eBay bought shaft for $100 failed in 5 months.
I just replaced it again few weeks ago.

I rebuilt mine with Moog joints

Maybe too late to post this, but DO NOT get the cheap Lucky 8 shaft, nor any other cheap ebay shaft. I did, and both were so bad I had to put back on my old one that I had taped a washer to where a weight had fallen off, and it was WAY better then the cheap crap mentioned. Just go with Woods and do it right. Believe me, I have changed my shafts at least 10 times here. Dont waste time, do it right. I learned the hard way.

I wouldn’t say all driveshafts on eBay are bad. You just have to do your homework and read up on reputable companies who make them.
I bought mine off of eBay for $270 from Trans Axles & Driveshaft Distributors TADD (A division of A-1 Drive Shaft Co. Inc., Milwaukee, WI) 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 (NEW) FRONT DRIVE SHAFT eBay

What sold me on their driveshaft was:
- The company has 35+ years experience in fabricating driveshafts
- The drive shaft is a direct replacement for the poorly engineered Land Rover OE driveshaft for the Disco II
- The shaft is fully serviceable with 5 total grease zerk fittings
- It is balanced at high and low speeds
- The shaft is built with 2"x.120 HD DOM tubing which makes it very sturdy and solid
- 90 day warranty with extremely helpful staff when I called and had questions about fitting this on my 2001 Disco.

Thanks for the link, Juke! I'll take a look. I was starting to lean towards just rebuilding, but if there's a truly solid option out there for 2-300, then it's worth it. I haven't seen too many bad reviews on the cheaper Lucky8 one though, does anyone else have any reservations about them?

I broke an L8 shaft pretty badly after about 250 miles. Thankfully I was going around 5 mph up an incline.

I'm now running Tom Woods.

So, after a few weeks of being buried in work, I'm finally able to take care of this. I reached out to Lucky8 and they put my mind at ease about the quality etc., so I'm just going to go with theirs. Then I got to thinking... Have I just jumped the gun and assumed the vibration and noise is the front shaft? Can someone just offer a little advice as far as diagnosing the prop shafts as the problem? I don't want to replace it and miss the actual issue.

I mean, its probably a good thing that you went ahead and replaced the front shaft because if those go -- lots of other stuff goes with it. I might not solve your issue but it will certainly prevent an even larger problem down the road! Just make sure to grease it at every oil change..
