Default Putting Disco I CDL in 2003 Disco II

I have a 1994 Disco I that I am going to be selling as a parts car (It runs fine but its got 250K miles so don't want to mislead someone). Anyone interested? I have no qualms about driving it from Beaufort SC to deliver to someone if they'll pay my trip back or bring me back. Car is solid with no frame rust (southern TN car and not really off roaded much), but just a lot of miles.

I also have a 2003 Disco II with 125K that seems to be past the oil pump failure point (seems it would have failed by now if it was one of the defectively machined blocks - or at least that is my hope) Got into it pretty cheap and could probably put in a new engine if I had to.

Does anyone have a good set of detailed step by step instructions for putting the Disco I CDL in the Disco II? Is this a really difficult task? I have acess to a lift and plenty of tools in a military auto hobby shop. I looked for a thread in the sticky but it was about changing the shifter/actuator only I think or an aftermarket kit.

Thanks
Smokey73

You will have to either swap transfer cases or re-build yours. You can just add the linkage to the 99 to mid 01's, but they did away with the locking feature totally on yours. They realized they messed up and cam back with it in 2004.

Default Branch of Service - Navy

Jason,

I was Navy (Nuc Submarines) from 73-80
Navy Reserves (Eng Duty Officer) 81-2000
Now retired living in Beaufort SC. We have both the Marine Corp Air Station (MCAS) and Parris Island Recruit Training District. Both have auto hobby shops with lifts, tools, etc. Great deal when you like to work on cars and don't have or want to keep all the equipment yourself!

I've got two Discoverys (will be getting rid of the 94 soon), a Mercedes 380SL, and our son (also Navy, on a Patrol Craft -Kick-@## ship) has a 1964 Corvette Coupe 327/300hp that I have for safekeeping while he is deployed in the Persian Gulf. All take some TLC now and then.

Thanks for asking and keep our service members of all branches in your thoughts and prayers.

This site may give a better explanation of what you will need for your install...

If you are talking about the actual CDL diff and adding it to your 03 t/case, I wouldn't unless all the gears from the D1 CDL are in good shape.
I think I would rather see you buy a new CDL for around $350 plus the linkage and keep it clean.

That's some awesome stories Of service smokey and disco guy! I am stationed on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. I have heard great things about our hobby shop on base but have not had the chance to check it out yet!

Also to disco mike. Does the tracttion control systems still work fine when you put the cdl in? Also what is the benifit of the locking central differential. I understand what the diff lockers do but a little foggy on cdl. Thanks!!

Hey sailors. HAHA. Sorry Marines get to say that though. I am in the process of putting a D1 Shifter on my 2001 D2. It is a bit different from the one detailed in the video. I will take a few pics tomorrow when I put her back together. Main thing is it uses linkage vs. cable. So the old cable for high low will be removed, and there will be linkage going to the diff lock instead of the cable gismo. Also, the D1s mounted to the top of the tranny instead of to the console plate this isn't a problem there are four bolts in the top of the unit, but they are a slightly different pattern so new holes will need to be drilled.
