Default Question about the 4wd shifter

Just got my 04 Disco and noticed that the 4wd shifter is stuck in high. Is that normal? I havent had a chance to drive it because I am rebuilding the motor due to a slipped sleeve. Concerned about the position of the shifter and have never been off road in a 03-04 discovery. My older 02 was different. Thanks for any pointers.

I'm assuming the battery is disconnected since you are rebuilding the engine? The 04's have a lock mechanism on the CDL/4WD shifter (Not sure on previous years). You will need power and gear selector in Neutral before it will let you shift out of High range.

Okay, just found a tutorial on how to use it. Was concerned that there was a issue with the 4wd since the disco has multiple issues already. Thanks again

I don't think there's an interlock on the range shift (back and forth), but it's usually easier to shift when you are rolling very slowly and in neutral on the transmission. This is the same as the 1999-2002 D2 trucks.
The 2004 trucks have an interlock on the CDL shift, but that requires you to move the lever sideways.

Hitting the linkages with some silicone oil will help, you can see one from underneath teh passenger side looking up the the rear. The other from the driver side rear looking up and forward

It has probably never been selected out of High range, so the linkage may be rusted/seized.

With the amount of rust underneath thats most likely the reason it wouldnt move

Interlock Solenoid 94-02 = mounted on the TC itself, 03-04 = mounted on the actual 4wd cable/shifter assembly.
