Default Question on prop shaft.

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and to Land Rovers as well. I just bought a 2002 Discovery with 60500 miles. To be on the safe side I just changed the oil and filter, front and rear dif. fluid, and T case fluid. I have been reading about some type of problem with the front shaft on Discovery's? How do I tell if I need to replace the prop shaft on my Rover? Or If I even need to replace it? Does the 2002 Discovery have this problem?
Thanks for your time.

Look on the front prop shaft to see if it has a greasable u-joints at the transfer case end. The one on the front diff side should have a greasable u-joint from the factory, but on the transfer side it has a double u-joint and they weren't greasable, so they have a tendancy to fail and it could puch a hole in the transmission if it happens at speed.

If it's updated w/ the fittings it should look like this...

If not. Rebuild it to look like this. Run a search here in the forums for help ton of info) on rebuilding it yourself. If you don't feel up to the challenge (trust me it's a challenge) take it to a reputable machine shop. They shouldn't charge you anymore than 100.

Rebuild it even if it has grease fittings everywhere, you have no idea if it was properly serviced on schedule before you bought it. Odds are extremely high it wasn't.

Just replace it... I replaced mine with an aftermarket one from super8.... it was several hundred dollers and my buddy laughed at me and said that I "babied" my discovery... and that I over re-act... as he does nothing to his Discovery and its fine... two weeks later later his failed. He had it towed to the dealor.. price to get it fixed: $7990.00. It's much cheaper to just replace.... just sayin....

Also, consider going to the top of this section and doing the major service so you can complete what should be done in order to get your truck current.

Is the ball inside the cv head easily greaseable on these?

If those dynamic drive line shafts are handbuilt and "customizable", has anyone asked them to build a +.75" shaft for those with 2" lifts? I wouldn't mind that.
