Quite disappointing
So this is a bit of a warning and rant... it's a bit long so the cloves' notes: Don't buy the expensive coolant expansion tank from your LR dealer. It's the same as the long known poor quality aftermarket ones.
Now the whole story: I replace my tank before a 1400km trip towing my trailer because it had a crack at the bottom nipple. I read online about the poor quality $40 ones you can get from part stores so I paid $300 CDN for the real thing. It lasted about 2000km and cracked between the two front ''humps'' (very weird idea LR had to make a tank with that shape). I thought it was bad luck, went to the dealership and they gave me another one. The second one lasted another 3 months and about 1500km. I went back to the dealership and asked them to do a check for what was going on... the parts guy told me he investigated with LR and apparently for the past couple years they almost all get replaced numerous times under warranty. They might have changed supplier... other weird thing is the tanks they sell don't fit right away, you now have to trip the foot down so it fits in the ''slot'' in the bracket. So a third tank went in. I also had coolant coming out the back of the engine so I did a head gasket job before putting the new tank in. The coolant system was not getting over-pressurized or anything we checked the pressure. The third tank lasted another few months, so less than 10,000km and 3 cracked tanks, all at the exact same place.
Dealer said: just out of warranty so out of luck. I called LR corporation. I received a phone call and the lady explained to me that because my car was old, ''Coorporation'' didn't care about it. I explained to her that the car may be old but the part I got was new... there was probably a quality issue with a new supplier. She argued with me for a while that dealerships are privately owned so the parts they sell me are their problem... I explained to her at great length that dealerships don't ''make'' their parts or don't source them from local people, they order them from LR Corporation. She said she would call the dealership.
I got a call back today and low and behold... as the first part was installed by a independent LR specialist and the 2 other ones were installed by me, LR Coorp didn't care about the issue...
Anyway, quite disappointed and I picked up an old tank from a scrap yard and hopefully that one will work.
Have a great weekend and hopefully others won't make the same mistake I did.
