Default Re: XRAD'S New metal marble sound

So this just started. When coasting in gear, I get a metal marble sound from under the front pass seat/center console. Coasting in any gear but more obvious when moving more slowly. Trans has o problem shifting gears, but I did notice that when putting into park the other day after using HI/LOW gears, it sounded like the parking pin was not grabbing. It goes into park fine now and stays in place on an incline.... No codes...all mounts are good.

It does this in N,1,2,3,4 when coasting...

Not sure if it's the tranny or the transfer case(probably the transfer case when in HIGH).. anyone experience this?

Trans probably has 194000 miles on it.... don't know about the transfer case....

EDIT: pretty sure it's the transfer case....seems to be not uncommon to have decel noise when something inside it took a crap.....several post years back in this forum....

I do have a spare 04 T-case. Funny, the install guide studs arrived yesterday! NOT looking forward to doing this repair...

Pardon a silly question- but what are these install guide studs you speak of?

to center the transfer case on to the transmission output shaft, there are 3(?) studs. two 6" and one 9"? i think. studs go into tail end of transmission where the transfer case bolts were. Slide the transfer case off or on to the studs and it makes locating much easier. Not really necessary, but helps you from screwing up the input seal.....

I just ordered a set of 5 200mm stainless studs off ebay for ~24$ in what I hope is the correct thread size (m10 x 1.5 ).....two will be cut down to necessary length..

I sent mine to my trusted mechanic to do the TC swap to CDL. Should be out of the shop today. I didn't want to do this one in the garage. Keep us posted on progress.

I just bought some bolts from Homedepot and cut the head off when I was doing my CDL swap. They don't need to be 6" long. Mine were about 3-4" long. It definitely helped getting the transfer case lined up. It's a tight squeeze to get it up there. I first tried to muscle it up, but the tight fit stopped me. If there was a couple more inches I think I coulda got it up there. Then I realized I had a motorcycle jack from Harbor Freight. It worked great.

No adapter. Used 2 12” 2x4’s to support the side to get it sitting straight so it’d slide right in. I put the jack long ways so the handle was back toward the rear axle which only left me about 6” of jacking, but it worked out great. Once I got it supported it, it took me about 10-15minutes to get it mounted.
