The poor towing capabilities of my disco were one of the biggest reasons I sold it. A rather anemic engine and poor braking made for a pretty uncomfortable experience, and the handling wasn't exactly confidence inspiring either. You guys must be a little more adventurous than me.
I tow 2 snowmobiles on an aluminum trailer all the time. Probably weighs less than 2500 pounds. It doesn't do very well going up grades. It won't hold 3rd gear so you have to rev the snot out of it in 2nd just to maintain 55 mph.
I towed this: A SeaSprite 23 Sailboat from Westport NY to Atlantic City NJ. 385ish miles. I know for a fact the trailer weighed 972 pounds (I scrapped it) and the boat is supposed to weigh 3200. So basically I towed 4000 pounds up and out of the valley Lake Champlain is in, down the Thruway, past NYC, and down to Atlantic City on a rusty trailer with non-operational brakes. The only problems I had was the long climb getting out of the Lake Champlain Valley and a hapless Canadian Tourist who tried to merge between the back of my Disco and my boat. How he missed the huge white boat was beyond me.
yes, this trailer is far too long and very tongue heavy
Last year I got rid of my SS23 and bought a Montgomery 17 up off of Long Island. That was 1400 pounds of boat plus about 500 of trailer around NYC, over the Narrows Bridge and down to Atlantic City. Compared to the SS23, the Landy barely knew it was there.
Did a 7 hr round trip today in my old 2000 with 223k on it with the 6 x 12 Uhaul utility trailer (empty weight 2290 lbs). Two complete back halfs in there with rearend, grill guards, tires, tools, yada yada. Probably 4000lbs of gear. Pulled 70 mph from Lynchburg VA through Rocky Mount down to Durham and Asheboro and back, AC on full blast. No issues.
Man I'd love to say this would work well here in CO lol I struggle up just about any serious grade so can't imagine towing anything over 1000 lbs if that.
