Default Rear axle seal leak -Need new hub assy?

I have developed a leak from my rear axle seal. Do I have to replace the entire hub assembly? Are they truly unserviceable?

The local dealer quoted me a price of $650.00 for one! Where would the best place to order from be?

Which seal is leaking? Front or side?

If your axle seal is leaking, it is a new hub that is needed.
How mechanical are you, the hub is easy to replace and can be bought for around $400 for Rover connection, including a new speed sensor.

I have no problem tackling complicated mechanical tasks, so I am confident in doing the hub swap. Thanks for the replies.

With DII's you need to replace the whole hub as one unit.
DI's you just replace seals. Yet another reason DI's are better than DII's.

there has to be a cheaper way to stop a axle tube oil leak than a new $400 hub.

$350 for a simple problem is also unacceptable. what about aftermarket off-road axle seals that have a zerk fitting so you can grease to keep out mud? They cost about $50/pair. I can't remember who makes them, I'll try and find a link.
