Default Rear bumper attachment?

sup fellas

long time.

I got into a minor accident on Saturday up at the ski areas in the mountains outside seattle.

basically it was icy and snowing and stopped at a intersection behind several cars and a escalade slide into the back of us. basically because my truck is lifted his headlight, fender, grill was the same or similar height to my rear bumper. so the passenger side rear bumper was pushed in about an inch and the back up/rear fog light lens and housing was mashed.

the bumper is now kind of lose fitting so I assume there is some sort of crash or crush structure mounting the bumper to the frame?

the goal is to get the pay out from the escalade guys insurance and use it to upgrade to a steel rear, but I wanted to know if I need to replace any structure under the stock rear bumper or if it is something that gets ditched when swapping to a steel unit.

thanks for the help and if anyone has pics of a swap they did and shows the truck without the rear bumper and what pieces are under it, would be very helpful.

thanks

sloppy

Plastic...plastic is the structure that mounts to the rear of the chassis

it did sound rather crunchy under there when I was moving the bumper back and forth.

is that plastic needed or have to be replaced to use a new steel unit?

It's like 4 bolts or so, get underneath and you'll see them. They're at the left and right of the bumper.

Pull the fog lights out and you will see the bolts.

Had the same thing happen in the same snow, only my truck was parked on the hill in front of my house. The neighbors Subaru looks much worse!

A few differences though, the Subaru was low and it was the other corner of the rear, in addition to broken plastic bumper and light housing my exhaust pipe impaled the front plastic on the Sub... jostled the pipe against the fuel tank heat shield and the piece of frame on the other side. As well the spare tire mount was bent downward as the tire took out their grille.

The insurance adjuster quoted a new rear muffler, pipe section, an "exhaust seal," and a new spare tire carrier. in addition to the bumper and light... Just under $1500.

Should get me into a nice steel bumper, I'm liking the TF one on the RN site (no affiliation.) They do take the same light housing and lens correct?

I'll have the exhaust inspected better once I can get it on a lift, and probably try to bend the tire carrier back into shape myself. And of course I'll install the new rear steel myself too!

Would most of you get a steel rear bumper if you had a steel front bumper?

I like the stock rear bumper. If anyone could duplicate it in steel I would pay just as much for it as I did for the ARB new.

depends on how you plan on using your truck. I find my rear bumper gets hit more than my front bumper as the *** end sticks out so far, it likes to drag off of ledges. If more moderate or not much off-roading I'd stick with stock. I'm also not a huge fan of any of the metal rears on the market today.

The stock bumper would cost a fortune to replicate in steel, would weigh way too much, and not fix faults with the rear bumper.
