Question Rear metal spring coils.. Dimensions ?

Hi all.
What is the internal diameter, thickness and uncompressed height to convert from air to coil, to choose what fits from a non-Rover junk yard a block away from home.
Anyone knows a potential donor ?

I did a ton of research on this at one point and unfortunately did not save any of it (at least anywhere that I can remember). That said, I do recall that there are virtually no other vehicles that share similar enough spring dimensions. If you're looking to convert from air bags without buying new parts, your best bet is going to be to either find someone local parting out a D2, or to contact someone online who parts out D2s (Abran, Paul Grant, Will Tillery).

If you'd like to do some more research on your own, I used the Moog website quite a lot because they listed ID, OD, length, and spring rate for nearly all their springs at the time. You could then cross reference part numbers to see what they were intended for. That said, you are still going to need to source lower spring mounts to convert to coil, whether it be factory coil mounts or something to fit an alternative springs which would likely turn into a fabrication project.

Doesn't make any sense...... Why waste time and effort??? just get the correct used springs and spring seats and isolators for a Disco from a scrapper ........did you look at ebay or roverparts? It will be wayyy easier to use correct parts.....

there is a lot more to spring physics/design than just coil diameter and thickness....

Plenty of those parts on Ebay, or from Will.

Because some folks would rather spend the time and effort instead of money, whether due to inclination or situation. Some just like seeing what will work. No need to belittle someone for asking a question, that will create a negative environment that will drive people away from the forum.

"there is a lot more to spring physics/design than just coil diameter and thickness" - and there is some more, but not a lot more. That's enough information for an approximation.

oh please Alex......no 'belittling' here. You are just guessing about the money issue. Sounds more like a convenience issue. He asked for donor options and I'm posting mine. I'm sure that someone here has all the used disco parts the OP needs for about the same price as the local junk yard wrong parts......with wayyyyy less issues on install....

and of course spring steel alloy and compression rate and wire end design has little to do with it.......

a great option: fix a disco with the appropriate parts the first time.......

on ebay 5 min search, free shipping:

"Doesn't make any sense...... Why waste time and effort???" I understand this as condescension, but you may mean otherwise. I'd say your guess of convenience is just as much a guess, but either way still a valid reason, and "money issue" was not the only reason I listed.

"and of course spring steel alloy and compression rate and wire end design has little to do with it......." Spring alloy is all over the place and you can make very reasonable approximations without knowing... as do aftermarket manufacturers. Compression rate is largely determined by wire diameter, spring length, and number of coils. Wire end design is not a terribly difficult aspect to overcome, but can be determined once the other questions were answered.

I agree with you that the "right parts" are the easiest choice here. I agree that, especially when time is taken into account, they are the most cost effective solution. That said, I think it is reasonable to entertain alternative solutions particularly when they are someone else's questions about their own rig. Sometimes interesting discoveries are found when we entertain outside the box thinking. I myself have had many a hare brained idea, most of which do not come to fruition after fully fleshing out possibilities, but some of which do. All of these thought processes expand my knowledge and understanding of concepts surrounding them, which can then be applied to other bodies of knowledge.

Anyway, I am not trying to start something here. I am going to leave this discussion where it is as I have no further information in response to the discussion at hand. My only ask is that responses remain helpful and thoughtful so that we all may help one another more effectively without hindering discussion.

Thanks all.
Got stock coils, and am adding dimensions to the thread if anyone needs them in the future:
390mm long, 153mm OD, 123mm ID.
