Rear wiper mystery

Rear wiper mystery
98 D1
In trying to adjust my rear wiper arm a couple of months ago, so as not to rub on the window seal, the arm snapped. I finally obtained a replacement arm and being one of those "simple 10 min jobs" I fitted it no problem. Imagine my surprise when I went to test it and nothing happened when I pressed the switch! It had been functioning perfectly prior.
Obviously it can't be the fuse because the other components on that circuit are fine (cruise and door mirrors). I would like to test to see if I have power on the switch but not sure how. I am ok with testing two wires for power but the switch has 4, red, orange, green and black. Can someone help with a test procedure please?
Also I have the motor exposed in the back door but there are two different connectors. I would like to see if I have power at the motor too so if someone can help with a procedure for that I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks,
Alan

Boy do I feel dumb! thought I would head all the helpful comments posts off ASAP. The rear wiper switch is inoperative with the drivers door open! I just got in to run an errand and thought to give it one last try and presto the wiper motor worked. When I tried it with the driver door open it didn't! A safety feature???
