So... I decided to reboot and regrease my cv joints since I had just disassembled the front end while replacing ball joints, and installed poly bushings, end links, and new track rod and drag links... My disco is an 02, and I've owned her since 05. To my knowledge the cv's have never been serviced so I figured, I have it all apart now, might as well do it.
Got the first hub off.
Pulled the half shaft.
Pulled the hub off... No problem thx to a claw puller.
My problem is that here I'm at the limit of my knowledge.
RAVE 54-11 #5 states "Using a suitable drift against the inner part of the joint, remove joint from shaft."
Anyone willing to expound on that process a bit??
I'v looked around a bit, and I see some on the internet swapping out the half shaft w/ a new one, but can't find a demo of a proper reboot where the CV is separated from the shaft.
Any suggestions will be a great help!
Thanks Cut the old boot off, and wiped the grease out of the way... Honestly... It all looked fine
Not knocking the repair as I think its cool to do, but if you have gotten this far.....a brand new axle is less than 80$.....with boot and grease installed......
Also , watch which way you install the new axle seals.....
The CV joint separates from the axle, and the little 'hat' (part that goes into the seal) also comes of the axle....using something like a split plate to pass the axle through then close around axle, then knock the 'hat' off, or the CV joint...think it's just a spring clip inside the CV joint....
So I just hammer it off with like a hand sledge until the circlip surrenders?
Yeah I know, $80 seems appealing now, but the shaft and cv itself is (seems) fine. splines are all well formed, not too much visible wear, still nice tight fit to the hub, just thought it could use new grease. Pitty there's not a 1 way valve on the boot.
Ok, I'll try putting it in a vice and knocking it off in the morning.
Ok, so the retaining clip is just a split ring.
I used a drift chisel against the inner flat of the cv joint just past the spaser. Use a hand sledge and a med - light hit from about 12"-18" of swing... Popped right out.
Oh... Clamp the shaft in a vice first, and put something soft on the floor to break the fall.
Otherwise the job was Very easy, and only costs $24!
Would recommend this job over replacing... Assuming your joint and splines are all in good shape.
For sure... Mostly cleaning the old grease out.
The boot kit I got (from AB) has the new boot, inner and outer securing rings, a new split retaining ring and a sachet of grease. Just loose fit the boot. Squeeze the grease in, secure and done.
Having a quarter roll of paper towels on hand is good too.
Thx everyone for the helpful suggestions!
I drove down to my local tire shop with the socket for the axle nuts and slipped one of the techs a $10 to zip off the nuts and then retighten so i could drive back home safely. Was able to remove nut with my sockets at home etc. Used a 6ft Snapon torque wrench from work to install a new axle nut..
