The Hi-Lift can be mounted to most off road bumpers with brackets. There's not much room for other things like shovels or axes and they usually are mounted on the roof rack. Keeping the Hi-Lift exposed to the elements means you need to really look after it so it doesn't seize from non-use. Here are a couple videos I took in a D2 with a Hi-Lift mounted on an RTE bumper.

A high-lift jack is heavy. VERY heavy. So heavy, that mounting it on an aluminium hood is probably a bad idea.
If you don't have steel bumpers you'll need the lift mate:
http://www.hi-lift.com/accessories/lift-mate.html
I don't have a winch, so to use it as one, I have the Off Road kit:
http://www.hi-lift.com/accessories/off-road-kit.html
You'll also need 20 feet of 3/8" chain.
If you are looking for utility, you can get the handle all kit:
http://www.hi-lift.com/handle-all/index.html
It comes in a bag though, so it would look kinda funny mounted on your truck. HEH.

To be honest, if the High lift is not on a roof rack or inside the car, there really is only one other place imo. Mounting on the hood is a pretty naff idea.........no offence met

To usea hi-lift on a discovery, you would need some offroad bumpers and rock sliders to jack under. The stock plastic won't hold the weight. I have a army surplus folding shovel in my storage compartment. Get a nylon ****** strap. I bought a 60 foot military tow strap that I keep with me. Nice for recovering Jeeps out of mud holes.
