Default Red RTV for Valentine's Day

All,

I've got some leaks and a bad water pump and this weekend is my work window. I'll be replacing the front crank seal, the water pump, and the oil pan gasket. I am sick of leaks!

I know where the red RTV goes on the oil pan gasket. I've replaced everything else before but it has been a long time. I've assembled all of the gaskets and seal. I'll have to find the tools but they are in the garage somewhere including a set to pull and replace the seal.

For the front cover, does anyone recommend for or against red RTV on the front cover? Any particular locations? I have no confidence in the paper gasket and I remember it being a real pain in the butt to get it to stay while I put the cover on.

Also, while I have it off, I think it is leaking around the whatchamacallet that the oil filter screws on to. I remember taking that apart to replace the oil pump. Any reason I can't take that apart the put red RTV on it while I have the front cover off?

I obviously have some large tubes of RTV and want to use them, but I don't want to have to take this all apart again because I over or under used it he RTV.

Any advice from you sages would be much appreciated.

Not sure about using red RTV, I almost always use "The right stuff" (I know sounds sarcastic but that is what it's called.). It comes in a spray can like cheese whiz, works great.

I wouldn't get to crazy with the RTV, you need to use it on the right things, new gaskets with clean mating surfaces will get you along way. Also be sure not to just goop it on there or you might accidentally block off something important.

I like to do a light coating on gaskets with rtv or high tac. More like a film of it rather than a bead

Very thin coating of right stuff. Red rtv works too, just wanna be thin and consistent.

Use a thin coating of rtv on both sides of the gasket.

I use rtv on almost everything. Hell, many times I've used rtv instead of a gasket with never a single issue.

However, I'd use the black rtv because it's designed for use while in contact with oil. You're probly fine using the red, but black is designed for that application.

Just to be clear, don't use right stuff and rtv on the same mating surface. Pick one or the other.

Also for clarification, you want permatex right stuff, which is a sprayable rtv. You don't want the insulation foam of the same name.

I had to Google it. My first thought was, "why would anyone use foam as a gasket sealant?"

Hahaha. I got the right stuff. Sadly it is the wrong price but I bought it anyway.

This is what I am working on... https://landroverforums.com/forum/discovery-ii-18/yearly-leak-water-pump-71334/page2/#post504363.

I used the red Permatex on front cover along with the proper gasket as well as on both sides of the rubber seal for the oil pan. No leaks yet.
