Default Reliability

I’m interested in replacing my soon to be rusted out Toyota Tacoma w/ an 01 – 02 LR Discovery 2. A quick internet search worries me a bit on the reliability end. Are these vehicles reliable? Well made? Is buying a used one a good idea? I plan to use this as a 3rd vehicle (3k per year) w/ a tow hitch to haul nothing heavier than yard equipment back and forth to the repair shop. Is there anything to look out for when buying these trucks? I’ve always liked them but don’t want to be hassled w/ constant repairs.

Thanks!

Be respectful talking to Mike- he's a Disco GAWD!

Seriously though, respect the guy's time... he's a HUGE asset to this forum, as you'll quickly find out.

I wanted a Disco for about 4 years before I could afford one, and did a ton of research during that time. I now own two, and I have found them to be incredibly well made and solid.

I guarantee you though, that if you get a Disco... it will quickly become your daily driver

I love my 97 and if I ever come across a smoking good deal like others on this forum have found I will have a second Discovery. My Discovery has never left me stranded on the side of the road or anywhere else and that is the most important reliability rating in my opinion.

Mike is a good guy and has forgotten more about Rovers than most people will ever know. I talk to Mike on a regular basis.

Well since everyone else is going to say they are uber reliable, I will change it up. It all depends on how the vehicle was maintained before you get it. Unless you know the person who owned the truck, you will probably run into a few problems.

Most problems seem to be ones that can be fixed by someone who is moderately mechanically inclined. Others like head gaskets are more for mechanics and shops.

Another problem I have found is that alot of the plastic on the vehicle seems to rattle and sometimes break. Not a big deal if its your 3rd vehicle.

And a last note. Even though my disco has left me stranded a few times, i can't think of a vehicle I would rather drive. I absolutly love my disco even with all the problems it has.

And like they said, Discomike will have no problem if you call him up and let him walk you through whatever repair you need to do.

I have had some problems with my 97 but it has never left me stranded. I have had new head gaskets, new water pump and a bunch of other little stuff but none of that has stopped my Rover.

I just got mine less than a week ago, and the features and the ride are amazing. BUT I have spent $1500 on maintenance on the vehicle in less that a week too. Also, the check engine light just came on. When you go to buy one. Check the tires, brakes, and driveshaft. We didnt pay as much attention to that, and are now spending money left and right. I hope though that once the money has been spent, the car will run good for awhile.

You're in that not so fun stage of doing all the maintenance that the previous owner should have done. Once you get through that stuff your costs will be a lot less to keep the truck going. The trick is to be proactive with maintenance, not reactive. In other words fix things before they become a problem.
