Default Replace head gaskets?

First of all I would like to say hi and I really do enjoy this website! I am a newbie and I am getting ready to be a owner of a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2. The LR that I am buying has a cracked block but is in great condition with 120k miles, I have found a engine out of another 2000 with 115k miles on it that I am planning on switching out myself maybe. My question to you guys is since I have no service records on the replacement engine and don't know what has and has not been done to it should I go ahead and change the head gaskets out before o put the engine in. Any other suggestions on what else I should do before I switch ot out.thanks on advance.CW.

Change all the gaskets and seals (front, rear, head, valley pan, upper intake, throttle body heater, oil pan), rebuild the heads (valve seals, lap/replace valves, new seals in head) and have them checked for warpage, check the lifters and pushrods for wear and replace as necessary.

Thanks for the replies,I sort of figured that I would need to change all of the gaskets. How long do the HG's last before they go or start leaking.thanks CW.

With these engines who knows could be 20,000 miles could be 100,000 miles. Also forgot do the front cover gasket and also change the timing chain and oil pump gear.

What head gaskets fo you guys recommend and where is the best place to buy them, and the rest of the gaskets that will be needed. Droped the heads off at the machine shop today to get valve job, seals and possibly resurfaced.

bad advice: dont do what they are telling you...

Gaskets; cometic gaskets.... http://www.cometic.com/ there about the best you will ever get. They are about $100.00 per gasket but your engine would explode before the gaskets will...

It's a lot easier to reseal an engine while it's on a stand than once it's in the vehicle. Since you have no idea but the maintenance pull it apart, inspect everything really closely, and slap it back together with all new gaskets. And since you don't know the history of the vehicle either go through the 60k service so all the fluids are new and in good condition.

Click on the link in my signature to download the RAVE manual. It will be a life and time saver.

As for parts source I usually go with Atlantic British (www.roverparts.com). There are a ton of other sources for Rover parts but so far AB has had everything I needed. Make sure to order new head bolts also as the original bolts are the stretch type that can not be reused.

I will check with Atlantic British for the parts. I am familiar with the Cometics gaskets, I use them my turbo mustang.thanks.
