Come on Spike. You bash mp3, but using an FM transmitter is ok? They sound like 4ss.
I was wondering about this myself. What's with the hate on the mp3/iPod players, Spike?

For anyone daring enough, I came across this last night:

IMHO MP3's sound like crap. They downgrade the music to make it smaller so that it can fit in a smaller space.
If Bach only wanted a 6 piece orchristra that is how he would have written his music.

If you like MP3's that is fine, I'm not bashing anybody, just MP3's.
I have bought MP3's off of i-tunes and burnt them to disc, only for the car though. If I listen to them in the house they sound like crap.

It all depends on the quality of the MP3/AAC file. Most people download the 128 kb/s files (and this is mostly what iTunes distributes). I think they sound absolutely horrid - on a good system, you can easily hear the garbled high frequencies due to the compression. Its even worse on a nice set of studio headphones.

However, if you purchase/rip your files at 192 kb/s or better, then this effect is virtually eliminated. Most audiophiles cannot tell the difference between a 192 kb/s MP3 file and a compact disc track (the MP3 encoder makes a big difference too...). On top of that, you can have lossless files - files that are compressed without any data loss. You can configure iTunes (or whatever media player you use) to rip music files at much higher quality. Unfortunately, they generally set to a default of 128 kb/s. Most people fail to notice.

All of my audio files are ripped to 320 kb/s AAC or into a lossless format (usually I reserve lossless for my classical and jazz music, it isnt really necessary with rock) - which is why I'd prefer to connect my iPod to my stereo - I hate lugging around CDs.

On related note, I was reading an article about audiophile quality speaker wire. Researchers brought in a group of self-proclaimed audiophiles to see if they could tell the difference between various brands of speaker wire. The test runner switched out the various high-end brands of speaker wire and the audiophiles could not tell the difference. What the tester did not tell that listeners is that he switched out the good speaker wire with metal coat hangers.
