i'm going to replace my wiper arms as the lock on one of them is broken.
While at the wreckers, should i look for a discovery 1 donor, so i can replace the blades with non LR blades?.
Are they a direct swap with the disco 2?...

The DI wiper ARMS are direct swap yes.....there are about 8,000,000 threads on this conversion.

 

and does any year disco 1 wiper arm fit..from 89 onwards?

94+ will fit.

You can get the arms at a junkyard, online parts supplier, etc,...

NOTE : If you can find a pre-94 Disco in the US ---> buy the truck, not just the wiper arms
