Default To Rotate, or not to Rotate...

You guys rotate your tires front to back every 7K miles? Conventional wisdom from Les Schwab/Tire Rack/Firestone suggests you do to even out the wear associated with a rear wheel drive...

How bout with a 4 wheel drive like the D2's?

What's been the thinking behind this?

Thanks

J

I dont.
I rotate mine like once a year, as long as your alignment is correct you should be fine in my humble opinion.
All four wheels driving and stopping at the same time...equal wear or damn close to it.

But everyone has their own opinions.
Some even rotate in the spare, why I dont know because i think that is a waste of a perfectly good tire that will last 20 years if it is covered and out of the sun.
If you rotate that in too then you will be buying 5 tires instead of 4 every 50,000 miles.

On my front wheel drive cars I dont rotate them at all.
The front tires last ~50k and the rears last 100k+ because all they do is keep the @ss of the car off the ground.

I rotate and balance every 7K. The steer tires are worn differently when driven, unless you always drive in a straight line and never turn.

I would rotate the spare in if I had a matching wheel. The tire will not last 20 years as Spike stated. It will "look" good, but detonate on your. The rubber breaks down over time. I had a spare come completely apart in my trunk. I had to pry it out of the hole. It was 17 years old.

I just went from stock size on my 01 D2 to 265`s. Bought 5 tires and will be rotating every 5k including rotating the spare in. It is not that much more for 1 more tire. I shouldn`t have to buy tires in a long while.

Just my 2 cent

I rotate mine every oil change. I figure i already have it up on the lift (yeah i have a 2 post lift in my garage) it only takes a few minutes to do it. Plus i run M/T tires they get real noisy if i dont rotate them.

when you rotate them yourself, what about having to balance them? would you have to put different weights on them since they're in different positions of the car now?
