Default Rotella or Delo oil?

I have been using Rotella 15/40, but how does the Delo diesel oil compare. I get my oil from Sams Club and they sell both. Just curious to see if anyone has any opinions.

I am a mobile 1 10w 30 with mobile 1 large filter set up.
Recently been considering the rotella oil.
Wish there was a survey on the site to see what oil people are running in their dsicovery.

IMHO the 10W30 limits you to operating at under 95 degrees F, per the shop manual. For inquiring minds the page from the shop manual is attached. Surprise, there is even a place to run 5W20, just glad I don't live that garden spot.

Many owners on this forum enjoy the benefits of something W 40. Pix of a clean engine from Street Wolf, at above 180,000 miles, Rotella at 3,000 mile change interval. And pix of another engine with different choices. One of the issues with high dollar oil is that owners are convinced they can extend drain interval. Not such a good idea in an engine designed in the late '50's - early '60,s. Your drain interval of 3,000 to 5,000 has a great deal to do with the oil performance.

The diesel rated oils have extra cleaning formula, and the ability to keep more particles in suspension, so the filter can trap them. Diesels have to control soot in the oil.

I also run the Rotella T6, and IMHO those who purchase high priced oil, justify it by way extended drain interval, are ignoring the fact that the engine produces most of the dirt, the oil simply transports it, and the filter has to remove it. If you maintain regular original drain intervals with fancy expensive oil you will get the better performance of that oil. If you run it until the lease payments are up, not so good. I would rather have basic diesel truck oil changed every 3 - 5K, with jumbo filter, than super snake oil # 769 and baby sized filter changed every 25,000 whether you need it or not.

Regular Filter. Mobil1 5W40 MB229.51 spec. changed every 2k. Bought my truck with 79k last February. Just rolled 86k and oil is nice and clean. First few changes, it was extremely black. But now, its all good. Everyone will give you a different opinion on what to run. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Going to try the Rotella 15W40 on the next change. I do regular oil changes around the 3000 mile mark so I guess I am just leaking the more expensive Mobile 1 for no reason.

Was surprised to see the effect of Rotella on our 2003 Discovery. We bought the truck in July 2011 with 121K miles. We noticed during our replacement of the rocker cover gaskets the rocker arms were covered in black carbon build up from years of conventional oil with the prior own.

Now with 127K and two changes of Rotella T6 a peek through the oil fill tube the rocker arm shows only few spots of the black carbon. The stuff works and we are the believers in the cleaning power.

The truck now has oil leaks and we are sure it from the deposits being cleaned but we plan on addressing these leaks when we change out the radiator, the power steering line & switch from Dex cool.

2003 Discovery 127K with high miles service complete.
