Default rough riding Disco 03 SE

has anyone experienced on highway a little rough riding? it feels like riding on smooth pebbles... especially during acceleration ... also with holding steady at 40mph range feels soppy... I don't get any codes except 430 which Im aware of and should have nothing to do with this... it seems more prevalent at nighttime in town on way from home but maybe its that side of street... otherwise all smooth surfaces...

When was the last time you got your tires balanced? What about your alignment and has your drive shaft been rebuilt?

I noticed I do have the grease zero on the front drive shaft so maybe it is a newer one and the bolts look newer than one with 85k .... if its not ranging monday, Im going to go grease em up and also drain and fill transmission and diffs... also I do feel a little soft pedal on brakes, maybe it is also a contribution if hydraulic brakes are needing service...

If you only have 1 grease fitting on the front drive shaft it needs to be replaced or rebuilt ASAP, and if it is the shaft that is causing the rough ride, you better not drive it again till the shaft issue is resolved or you may loose your tranny.

What kind of tires do you have? I swapped my 18" wheels and tires for some 16" with 265/75/16 firestone destination m/t and they were bad on the highway. They had 90% or more of tread left but they were worn and cupped. Ypu could barely tell if you looked closely but the were worn unevenly. I ordered some 265/75/16 guard dogs from treadwright.com for about $450 shipped to my door and have been extrelemy satisfied. They are very smooth despite the agressive tread, aren't too loud although you do hear a higher pitched quiet howl. I tow with them all of the time and have had them offroad quite a few times and they still drive like new. I had them use bfg all terrain ko 10 ply carcases. They are retreads but youll never know. You certainly can't tell by the performance. I will not buy offroad tires anywhere else for my rover

ok Ill look closer.. I just visually inspected quickly when under doing O2 sensors... I saw a grease zert and thought GREAT! mine is a newer one... i thought the bad ones did not have any zerts.... anyway, it feels nice and tight under there ... the roughness I have is almost undetectable just to clarify.. its just not what I would think a car of this level usually feels like.. it doesnt clunk or anything just at around 40 feels slightly sloppy... maybe thats normal? I have FLAKEN tires in good condition 90% left and feels smooth... also is the rebuild just like a normal driveshaft? replace the ujoints like ive done on other vehicles or is this something that needs complete replacement?

I spent more time inspecting this morning since I had a day off ( truck has been sitting just in case) and realized my front drive shaft had a grease zert on the uJoint and one on front and rear of Front drive shaft.. the dual u-joints that connect to the transfer case did not have grease zerts... even though there was one on the back of shaft also... anyway, I greased it all up with mobil 1 synthetic grease ( red in color ) and it is smoother.. one thing I noticed though is that when in park and hand twisting front drive shaft there is a little play.. maybe 1/2" and clunks ( maybe normal ) but there doesnt seem to be allot of gear oil resistance... would I kind of be able to feel a little resistance? I have to wait until next week to change that gear oil and inspect... I have the worst work schedule at the moment... lol and again .. it is not rough in the sense of feeling something is falling apart... it just doent feel like a porsche tighness... lol so not sure what Im supposed to feel that would be normal for these... lol

So, first of all get that front shaft replaced or rebuilt before it fails and takes out your tranny. As for the ride, your factory suspension has long since died, you have both warn out coils and shocks.

I have worn out front shocks and in the early stages of them failing I did notice the slight rough ride you are describing, like you feel every pebble on the road. And since I live in Seattle, the pebbles feel pretty damn big.

Now I know my front shocks are bad because they make a squinching sound when they fully compress.

Experts: Am I doing harm to any other components besides my buttock by waiting till I can afford new shocks? I have a few other higher priorities with the truck at the moment.

Also what shocks do you recommend for a stock rig that sees light off road/logging road type use and lots of freeway driving? The Bilsteins are getting expensive, and one guy I know suggested KYB's however I have not read good reviews of KYB's on Disco's.

And finally would it be a waste of money to get new shocks without getting new springs or should one do both at the same time?

Thanks!

Do both at the same time.

Tired/beat Supension equals unpredictable handling. Get it replaced and drive safe.
