RR p38 4.6L hse oil cooler
I think there's something about the oil pump/timing cover that needs altering to run the oil cooler though. The port is blocked off or something.
I added the oil cooler from my parts truck to my '03, but I had already replaced the cover due to wear.

There are two threaded plugs in the Disco front cover where the cooler plugs in, I don't remember specifically if the internals are different but the externals only require the removal of those plugs and the threading in of the oil cooler lines. Do a search on here and I am sure it will come up
just to clarify the p38 version of the hse 4.6 had a factory oil cooler. The 02-04 discos did not. There is plenty of room in between the radiator and the ac cooler it’s about the size of the transmission cooler which sits in front of the radiator. The p38 will not run without an oil cooler I have been told, makes me wonder if this is the reason the disco hse fail so consistently is a hotter internal temp due to less heat dissipation with an oil cooler.
I added an oil cooler to my '04 and got an aftermarket from Rimmerbros. There is no difference from space and mechanical attachments between pre-facelift and post-facelift D2, the cooler was just eliminated since '02. The attachments are on the coolant radiator, you need a single screw to secure it only (local hardware store). The original LR oil lines are hard to come by, but you can make your own with Swagelok compression fittings and parts from Summit or any other performance parts vendor. Check out my write-up here: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ys-cold-95865/ (the sandwich thermostat is not required on a P38 engine, since it has a working bypass valve for the oil cooler) .
i have two '04 Discoverys.
one has an oil cooler. the other does not.
the truck with the oil cooler runs at temps consistently cooler than the truck with no oil cooler.
for comparison, the '04 with the oil cooler has a 2" lift, 31" tires and an after market steel bumper with bull bar and spotlights.
the '04 with no oil cooler has 30" tires, no lift and a light duty steel bumper. but, even when stock it always ran hotter than my other '04.
both trucks have newer radiators, newer water pumps and hoses. the '04 that runs warmer even has the inline thermostat mod.
i think the oil cooler makes a difference.
