Default Rubber Plug?

Hi Guys,

Thanks to all whom provided good advise for my oil sump project.

One last and very frustrating item remains. Someone must have a trade secret to getting this rubber plug back into the hole!

I've tried lubing it, bending and folding it and pressing from every conceivable direction. It just isn't happening. When I removed the sump, the plug was crammed in the hole taco style. Not a very effective plug!

The hole measures 1-1/2 inches and the plug is 1-3/4. My local Land Rover dealer says it the correct plug. I'm doubtfull.

Please..... someone has to have some experience with this thing.

Thanks,
Michael Wm Gould

What is that plug for?
Where does it go exactly?
Looks like it plugs the inspection hole to the flywheel.

it is, I would think a block of wood and a mallet should do it.

Spike555- Your correct, it does plug the inspection port for the Flywheel.

lipadj46- The thought of mallet and wood has crossed my mind several times. The problem arises in that the plug diameter is bigger than the hole.

Racking my brain on this one. The LR dealership assured me it's the correct plug. But then again, it took me 3 months of work to undo the damage they did to my truck after a scheduled maintenance. I'm still finding missing bolts and things done wrong.

Heat it up? Make it a little more pliable? Never dealt with this particular thing, but you could give it a shot.

It does look like the correct plug, the heat gun sounds like a good idea

It's already quite flexible, but I like your thinking. I'll give it a try.

Thanks, MWmG

I have mine out now too. It will not go back in either. I think I will get a new one. Maybe oil and coolant getting on it made it swell up. Mine is also quite flexible, it just will not stay in the hole. I will try freezing it to see if it shrinks.

If you need a new one the part number is ERR7229 $6.52 ea. from the dealer. I did a google search on this number, not much came up on this part. I found the number from this guys web page. He swapped a 4.6 into a DI, pretty cool truck.

Thanks for the input... I placed the rubber plug in lightly boiling water for about 10 minutes. The rubber definitely got hot, but didn't make a bit of difference at all in regard to pliability. If anything, it seemed be less pliable. (sounded like a good idea to me)

It's not rocket science. The plug is bigger than the hole... it's not going in! Even if I did somehow get it in place, the rubber would be forced to scallop around the perimeter producing a poor seal.

I think at this point I'm going to search for a rubber plug of appropriate size and RTV it into place.

Wille00D2> If you get yours reinstalled could you please post your method here?

Thanks,
Michael Wm Gould
