Running hot - bad fan?
I'm starting to worry about my '04. I purchased her in December - now that it's starting to warm up in GA I believe I'm seeing the start of some warmer engine temperatures as well.
Here's the scenario: 70-degrees outside, driving down the highway ScanGuage is showing 198F. At a stoplight, the temperature climbed to 215F, and once to 220F.
Normally I've been watching the temps and at stoplights I see 211F, running 200F.
With the 70F weather taking her up to 215/220F I'm really worried what she'll do when the weather is 90F.
I'm running the infamous red coolant with Water Wetter. A/C fan is running. New Tom Woods drive shaft (ha-just thought I'd throw that one in). When I am parked, if I let the temp hit 215F, I can put it in neutral and rev the engine to 1500rpm and the temp will start lowering slowly. I can't hear the main fan - I don't know if you are suppose to in the DII - I had a 95 DI and you could hear the fan when you reved the engine. With the engine off, the fan doesn't seem to have bunches of resistance - that is you can grab it and when you attempt to spin it - it will spin a few more inches once you let go, but like I say it's not stiff - I don't know how stiff they're suppose to be. Does this sound normal for the fan?
My other thought is the radiator - truck has 124000m on it. Service records have never mentioned a new radiator.
Again I'm basing these temps on ScanGuage temps - the needle stays in the middle - when it was 220F it looked to be a frog's hair above middle.

The temp gauge wont go above the middle range until the engine temps are at 230 or above.
Replace your fan clutch, it has to little resistence.
When you rev the engine and it is that hot you should hear the clutch fan kick in.
The clutch fan is supposed to come on around 210 and then shut back off below 200.
And just a FYI revving the engine when it gets to hot like that is a good thing to do, it forces coolant through the radiator at a faster rate so it gets cooled faster and then lowers the engine temp.

Wow ... I just got an education! So I ordered an AllMakes fan clutch. Pulled the fan and holy crap - it's a one piece fan. I called around to a few people, some vendors argued with me that they are two pieces (clutch and fan blades). However, it turns out that the 2003-2004 Discos take a one-piece unit (PGG000080).
The singe units are EXPENSIVE! Has anyone converted these over to the two-piece fans like on the 1999-2002 4.0L? Why do you think the Disco 4.6L needs this "heavy duty" fan and the P38 has the two-piece?

Wow, I did not know that either.

I dont think there is enough room for a two piece fan.
But I dont know for a fact.
