Default SAI troubleshooting

This is a general place to start if you having issues.

1st off there are ton of components that are generally related,just to make life interesting.

Start with RAVE page 17-2-6 and 17-2-7 (page 343-344ish Adobe) for basic details then 17-2-49 to 17-2-52 for basic repair info (page 386-390ish Adobe)

Codes are covered between 17-2-26 and 17-2-32 (pages 363-369 Adobe)

Start simple Vacuum lines most of the codes will thrown by vacuum line failures. There are 7 small and 3 large connections to check the span the left and right side of the engine. The small lines get brittle and crack over time and the rubber boot for the connections get loose.

Small lines each connector needs to be tested.

The bundle is a pain to get out but he best way to check for leaks is to tape off all the connectors but 1. Put the line in water and blow compressed from a can air in, watch for bubbles.

Start by checking the 5 basic connections,the lines in the images below will show each connection.


Vacuum cylinder connection - right side of engine bay

Intake connection right side of engine bay

Connection above the purge valve left side of engine. Make sure the electrical plug is firmly in place

Next check the control valves and related connections. Lots to check here
  • Small vacuum line
  • Rubber line that connects to the aluminum hard line
  • Hard lines to the head

Right side shown you need to check both right and left

Lastly you need to check the Pump and associated lines right rear of the engine bay.
  • Check the electrical connection to the pump as well
  • Pull the filter and check it they are known for disintegrating

That finishes the easy part - but most failures short of the pump dying are disconnected vacuum lines.

@Best4x4 l sounds good, I have some notes on BMW parts that might be compatible, pump and valves

Richard,

Great documentation, thank you!

And wierd timing too, my plastic accordian hose (last pic above) broke off at the bend over the weekend. The plastic pipe was probably already fragile from years of heat. I think it broke off completely from being nudged around during the work last month to fix my broken exhaust pipe. It is being held back together with Gorilla tape until I find a replacement hose.
