So I am moving down to Vegas from Seattle. I wanted to tow the rover since it would save a ton in gas. Couple questions:

1. Would it be safe to tow my Disco on a tow dolly? Not a car carrier like flatbed, but just the front two wheels off the ground. 2 inch lift with 275/65/18 tires.

2. If a tow dolly was safe, can I just put the t-case and transmission in neutral and be good to go? Or should I remove the rear driveshaft?

Put it in neutral and go, no problem.

 

I thought that the T-Case was supposed to put in "N" also?

If all 4 wheels are on the ground then you have to leave the key in the I or II position so the wheel won't lock. You are supposed to use the I position unless you need brake and turn signals.

Since you are putting the truck on a car dolly and lifting the front wheels you don't have to worry about the steering wheel lock. After putting the T-Case in "N" I believe you can return the transmission to park and remove the key altogether if you don't want to leave the key in the truck. Be sure to release the parking brake

 

Street Wolf, where did you get the black wheels? Are those LR or aftermarket? I can't see them good in the pic.

bballjames, I thought I read of someone towing one behind an RV with all four wheels on the ground saying that you put the t-case in neutral and the trans in park. BUT, you may want to search and verify that since it's been awhile since I read that and I could be wrong.

 

All the power to all four wheels goes through the T-case. If you put the T-case in neutral, it is completely disconnected from the engine and transmission. Be sure the parking brake/emergency brake is released. After that, it's up to you. If it were me and I was towing with the front wheels off the ground, I'd put it in park and lock the steering to prevent any from wheel movement.

 

The manual says to not tow it that way. It can be towed flat though, all four wheels on the ground, transfer case in neutral, transmission in park.

Personally I'd tow it on a trailer, all wheels off the ground.

That's good too. But if the rear driveshaft is out and the front wheels are up, it doesn't much matter what gear or neutral you're in.

 

I dollied mine from NJ to PA and just removed the rear drive shaft.
Towed fine.
