If you are looking for a system, go with CO2, it will last you a whole lot longer the O2 because it is in a liquid state where O2 isn't. My 15 pound CO2 bottle will fill apx. 40 32" Tire back yp from off road pressure of 18 pounds to 40, O2 can't come close. CO2 also drives your tools alot longer also.
The other end of it is, many people buy the scuba tanks thinking they can save money on them over a CO2 tank. Then they find out that if the tank is not certified for CO2, they can't get it filled.

I've heard of people using tanks of Nitrogen to power air tools at the track.

i'm surprised they don't just make a 12v compressor for air tools

the biggest problem i can see with running a nitrogen system would be leaks inside the vehicle... nitrogen is an inert gas and displaces all oxygen in an area (your vehicle) and will kill you if you leak enough into your car... google oasis compressors... its an onboard air compressor that is capable of running an impact wrench without the use of a tank... they are expensive but they are also the very best vehicle compressor on the market...

Cost me $12 to refill with 15 pounds of CO2 which is good for about 40 tires.

Is CO2 for winter pressures or summer?

You could probalby run air through that, as long you have decent regulator. However, by the time all of the bits are sourced, it might be cheaper just to buy a small compressor and and inverter.

I tried building a compressor system using an old John Deere rototiller engine and an alley shopped compressor cylinder... I finally realised it was cheaperto buy an air compressor.
