Default Shootin for a smoother ride in the ole disco

Question fellas, I've noticed with my 2" lift (Terrafirma) on my D2 it's been getting a rough ride. Now this lift is the HD version. Do I have any options to smooth out the ride by either grabbing a new set of coils, or shocks? Are the coils providing the lift while the shocks provide the ride quality, in a nutshell? I'm fairly new to wrenching on my truck. thanks fellas

I think when you go beyond factory specs the ride will be stiffer. I have an ome 1.5 medium spring and shocks plus a 265/75-18 tires, not too tall but they are stiffer. A softer setup, if there is, will be a bit scary on highway driving pass the speed limit.

Unless you do serious offroading the D2 is best left as a standard stock truck for various reasons, ride comfort, fuel economy, CoG and handling, spares and parts, etc.

The D2 was never a super smooth noiseless mover but as they get older they bump and grind a bit so it's what you get used to, that or earplugs plus some wacky baccy

I have ome medium front Springs and medium / heavy rear Springs and it's very comfortable with factory running gear. Stiffer than the mushy factory springs but from what I've read nowhere near as stiff as what you have now.

Since you have HD the spring rate is going to be stiffer aka a stiffer ride especially if your D2 isn't sporting a metal bumper on the front with a winch, rocker guards, metal rear bumper, armor, and expedition/off road supplies/spares. The HD Spring Rate = expecting you to have a loaded down vehicle.

If you aren't going to add that stuff then honestly you can get stock spring rate lifted coils or the Medium spring rated coils.

I definitely hear that, no pun intended. LOL

You make an interesting point. I just ordered an ARB Steel Bumper so that will at least weight the front end down, but the rear will remain at stock weight (with variability in weight due to cargo loads). Not sure why, but running HD 2" springs at the front and MD 2" springs at rear sounds a bit funky to me. But theoretically, with the weight spread that the Disco will have, that's the spring setup that seems to jive.

Mixing springs is very common with the 80 series Land Cruisers and am surprised not to see it with the Disco guys. On my 80 series I have OME heavy springs on the back and OME J springs on the front which is a tall version of the heavy. This gives me an even ride height using the different springs. OME makes a J for the rear but then the back ends up really high unless you have a ton of gear in the vehicle. You can do the same thing to maintain a level lift but get less overall lift by putting the heavy on the front and med on the back, and same again with med on the front and their HD stock replacement on the back.

'94, factory lockers and other goodies, it's for sale too

I am wanting to put Heavy rears on mine, I have Terrafirma M now on all four. Doesn't take a whole lot of weight in the rear to make it sag. When I first installed the kit 3 years ago, I didn't seem to have any rear saglishish, now I do.

This is the biggest complaint I hear about terrafirma. They sag. Idk if they don't shot peen their Springs or what but all long term accounts between ome and Firma that I've seen indicate that ome makes better springs. However, the stiffest ome springs only come out to a similar spring rate as the medium terrafirma

You might check the air pressure in your tires. You can often get by with less air pressure if you installed larger tires. Might try 25-30 psi f/r to see if that helps.
