Default Should I buy this 1997 Discovery?

Hello. I am in the market for a Discovery. I found a 1997 Discovery SE with 102,000 miles. The only exterior visible blemish is the front right fender. See attached picture.

The bluebook value is $6,000. He's offering to sell it to me for $3,500 -- maybe a little less. He said the only problems with it is the exterior fender and he said I would probably want to replace the muffler/pipe.

Is this still a good deal? Given the picture I attached, how much would it cost to fix this? What about the muffler?

Here is his ad:

97 Land Rover Discory SE 4.0 liter V8 4 wheel drive, runs & looks like new. 102,000 miles

I have receipts for many recent repairs I have made to this truck & a recent carFax. This truck got Carfaxes buy back guarantee and shows no problems ever.

two position front & rear electric sun roofs, heated power leather seats, plenty of wood trim in front, dual climate controle A/C and heat, factory 6 disc cd changer & cassette, factory over head garage door opener, can controle many options near steering wheel, Power: windows, lokcs, breaks, steering, delay wipers, daul air bags, roof rack, alloy wheels, running boards, rear mounted on gate spare tire & wheel with Land Rover cap or cover for winter.

I have taken some pictures with my camera phone and did the best i could. This truck needs two minor things to make it just about perfect. It needs a muffler & maybe pipe. And I parked in a space next to a monster type hi truck, when I came out I noticed he damaged my fender. It is the right front fender (passenger's fender) Nothing else but the fender was damaged. It can be repaired or replaced. It is white and white is the most popular color in the U.S. so it would not be hard to find one from a junk yard or match color. Thats it thats all it needs and i have tried to capsure that in the pics. I have nine pics if you do not see them all displayed, please ask me to e-mail you the rest.

The blue book on this truck is over $6000.00 in its condition.

I'm not trying to scare you butI got a truck same year and miles just like this about 6 months ago and it wasn't until a month or so later I noticed it was burning oil. I mean lots of it too. like everyone else says be sure and check the service records, if they check out it may be all good. I just wanted to share my very expensive lesson with someone. by the way $1000 or so later it turned out to be my no 1 exhaust valve. I'm still loosing oil but not near as bad. hope some of my ramblings help, good luck

a lump and a bump on a rover is not a problem. the price is great. I did not look at the pictures, so no comment on thoses. The most important thing is the maintanence records. for the start. Rovers are not cheap to fix. If well maintained they will give you little trouble, except for the normal quirks of the vehicle.
Check those out in the faq section or the most active section. Before you make a final decision take it to a rover dealer and have them inspect it. tell the guy you are buying it from that he will need to pay for the inspection. bumper, including electrical data link system. You may have to work out a deal on that. That all said. I have a 96 disco, had it since 96 and have done the maintainenance and more. has cost about 5000.00 over ten years and that includes the tires and brakes. I have 130k on mine. the same equipment that is on the one you are looking at. hope it helps, gotta love a rover/ duboff
