I lived in Scotland for the last few years a drove an old 110. It was a royal pain some times but I absolutely loved it! I have relocated back to the USA and am looking at a 2002 Disco 2 with about 110K miles. Seems to be in good shape. This will be a daily driver but not significant distance. Also, i will be using it to take the dog around and into the woods on hunting trips. A fair bit of mountain (Western NC) driving. I am OK with quirky and the low price allows for some repairs etc but I don't want to get killed on this thing. I can do a lot myself but there are limits.
Should I dive in?
What are the essential to check?
What is the big danger (Transmission, Engine, Computer, etc)?
Any great shade tree LR guys in between Asheville NC and Greenville SC?

There are literally dozens of threads about this very situation, so do a search and you'll find the answers you're looking for. Big items to check for is head gaskets, service history and price (duh)

Excellent indy LR shop in Greenville - Eurover - owned by Wes Bradstreet. Biggest thing to check is the frame rust under the rear of the truck - everything else is repairable and relatively low cost. Discos are pretty easy to DIY if you have a decent place to work on it, the cost of any needed tools is much less than the labor cost of any repairs. Get as much service history you can, but with 110k on the clock it is likely never had the HG done. If you don't overheat you might make it to 150k before it needs it. Overheat is the #1 problem with these, 75% of the time caused by coolant leaks from defective rubber or plastic cooling system components that fail and leak all the coolant out and 25% of the time by stuck thermostat. I have owned 11, and if I coudl buy one with 110k on it I woudl replace all cooling system plastic and hoses immediately, all hose clamps with worm drive clamps, and do the bypass thermostat mod. Watch the coolant level like a hawk, check religously once a week to avoid surprises.

I'm a Discovery 2 newbie in Western NC, as well. Picked an '02 up in Spartanburg with 88,000 miles on it back in August. Talk to Sean at Blue Ridge Rover Works. He is very knowledgeable and will be happy for you to bring it by for him to take a look. Also, this forum will, in fact, answer any question you have. I diagnosed a front drive shaft issue from this forum that saved me some cash. Good luck!

 

That would be a long trip from Scotland for a prepurchase inspection.
