Default Should I Buy a Disco II?

I'm very seriously considering buying a 1999 Discovery II with a boat load of miles on it. I love these things. I rode in one on a trip across two states once and fell in love with it. However, I have read numerous reviews on the internet that make me want to take my cash and bury it in the backyard. Do they really have a lot of problems? The one I test drove seems rock solid and I ran a carfax on it and it came back clean. Any opinions good or bad would be appreciated. Thanks.

Miles aren't neccessarily the issue......proper care by the previous owners might be. Look it over good, drive it for a while if you can, you may sometime have issues, these guys here can help.

Go for it! My wife wanted something four wheel drive for winter & I stumbled across this 01 disco II. Drove 2 hours to test drive it and bought it........as far as the miles, make sure the odometer is really reading miles & not Km like mine did. They sold it to me with 148000 Km, but listed them as miles, so it really only had 92000 MILES!! Even thinking that there was 148K on it, I still bought it. Only had it 2 weeks but no problems and have learned alot about it. I too was scared about having this thing in my garage after reading alot of these posts. But I also have old VW's, problems are always present with those, so I'm used to things going wrong.

Good Luck, Cheers!

Thanks for the replies. I let that one slide, but I'm still on the hunt for another one.

Why the DI? I've read 50 different "new purchase" posts and I can't really get an answer on this one. I'm not scared of the maintenance. I can take my old Ford truck apart in the dark and put it back together, but I don't know a thing about British vehicles. I did troll the atlanticbritish website and nearly had a heart attack when I saw the price of a fuel pump! So, I'm just wondering what kind of major issues do these things have. I'm also considering a 199-2001 Jeep Cherokee.

I have an '01 Disco 2 with 95k miles on it. Bought it with 55k, but since purchase have driven it from West TX to New Mexico to Central Oh... Central Oh, to Portland, Maine and back.. to Portland, Oregon to Seattle, then back to Ohio... To San Diego via Yuma, AZ and back to Columbus, OH. Most recently to the Florida panhandle and back. On top of the road trips, I off-road it every other weekend. I keep it maintained every 3k miles and have never had a problem...

because the D1 has alot less electronics and sensors and is easier to work on than the D2 and the D1 has diff lock on it where the D2 only has it in 04.
