Default Should I pull the trigger on new engine?

Hi everyone.

I found out that my block is bad on my new to me 2004 Discovery II. The truck is in great shape, great paint, great interior, and I am trying to decide if I should put a new Atlantic British or Turner engine in.

Any advice? Can I get something just as good or better for the 10-12k it is going to cost?

Would you do it?

Have you done it?

What else should I do when I do it.

Thanks!

First off, Welcome...

Second, I've heard that I need a new engine four times now in 180k miles of ownership. Only once were they right.

Detail your situation and the reason for this diagnosis and then if that sounds right you've listed most of the current options. The only cheaper one is to find a RR P38 block and rebuild that. Those were usually higher quality than the Discovery blocks... however since you have an 02, it should not be one of the blocks prone to failure like the 03-04 4.6.

Hi Dave.

Actually, I have a 2004 4.6. My signature reflects a vehicle that I had back in 2012. I just purchased a very clean 04 other than it overheats in about 5 min. I picked it up for next to nothing hoping that it was just head gaskets.

I diagnosed exhaust in the coolant with a test kit.

I took the heads off and saw that cylinder #5 was steam cleaned and there were no signs of head gasket failure. I should mention the truck has 134k miles and the head gaskets were replaced at 80k.

After getting some online opinions, and having a shop take a look and test the block with the heads off, everyone has told me that the best course of action is to replace the engine.

I am not really opposed to this idea as I would prefer a more reliable vehicle than a ticking time bomb.

I am open to ideas if you have any, but this is my thinking.

Thanks.

PS How can I change my signature?

Me, I would just get a used P38 engine and rebuild it. It is time consuming but really not that hard.

Accept you have a 14 year old truck, stuff goes even on so called solid engines.

This Land Rover's are all ticking time bomb's is kinda crap, looked after and maintained they are likely no worse than anything else of this age. I see lots of clapped out, rotted Jeeps, 4 Runners etc of the same vintage and I am on the West Coast.

Todco offers a performance 5 litre with all the goodies for our trucks for around 6500.00 I believe. Stroked, ported and flowed heads, top hat liners, cammed, arp studs, To me it’s a no brainer. As soon as I have enough cash that’s what I’m putting in mine. The advertised performance per dollar seems amazing.

Is Todco still around and functioning? I know there were more than a few threads a few years back saying the guy had gone ghost?

Another option is the trailhead 4x4 LS swap.

search LS conversion on this forum. another option if nothing else.

personally, if I had the funds, I'd go with the Turner or Toddco options.

I did a Turner long block with Kent cam and gas flowed heads. I couldn't be happier. I'd also replace plugs, wires, coil packs, the whole cooling system, fan clutch, starter, motor mounts, and flex plate. Good luck!
