Default simple, stupid question about SES light...

ok guys...before you laugh to hard, i am, to say the least, a complete rookie when it comes to auto mechanics! my service engine light recently popped on and the only auto shop near by (O'reillys) did not have an OBD2 scanner for me to use. so i quick ran over to costco and picked one up there ($40, great deal!) here comes the stupid part. i have NO IDEA how or where to plug this thing in to pull the fault codes for you guys to help me out with. can someone please describe to me where i plug the scanner into? also, does the engine have to be turned over to check the codes? or do i just have to turn the key to the "ON" postition? feel free to poke some fun at me...ha! but i am helpless without your help! THANKS! its a 2003 discovery

The DLC (where you plug the scanner) is on the driver's side, below the lower cover beneath the steering column. Follow the steering column down where it goes into the dash, and look slightly down and to the right. I believe there is some standard with OBD2 that the connector must be within a few feet of the driver or something. Ignition key then turned to "ON" to check codes.
