Default Smoke Test

03 Disco 2, all stock

I have a high pitch tea kettle noise coming from the middle of my engine at idle RPM only. Advancing the idle makes it go away, and I can even change the pitch of the sound by gently pressing the throttle. It seems to go away once the engine is good and hot. I took it to a shop, and after 2 days of T/S, they are now telling me they found and fixed one leaky vacuum line, but they need to do more tests. They are telling me they need to take the upper intake plenum off to perform this test to see if the lower intake seal is bad. This sounds like BS to me, as taking the upper intake plenum off the engine doesn't seem to me like it would allow them to do a smoke test. I have engine code p0441 as well.

I also have a vibration coming from the front end while driving. The same people told me I need upper and lower ball joints on both sides. I jacked the front end, and tried moving the wheels but they are not budging. Solid as a rock. No movement in the ball joint area, or movement at all like the wheel bearings are bad.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Engines to have vacuum leaks cold, gaskets are hard cold, then get soft will heat. They should take off the air mass meter and fill the intake system with smoke, cold! Vibration check the front driveshaft!!! If it breaks transmission case is toast.

Thanks for the advice. What am I looking for in regards to the front driveshaft?

If they spent 2 days looking for an audible vacuum leak, you need to find another shop.

Look for loose u-joints, rust at the u-joints. Rear double u-joint is the that breaks. Easy to remove and check also. If it has no zerk fitting at rear, just replace the driveshaft for peace of mind. Stock ones only good for about 60k.
