Default smoke test help

I'm have a vacuum leak that is a real problem. My brakes are weak at startup and when I have to use them twice fast, I'm lean on both banks, and the engine is a little rough. Worst of all, when the vac is low, I get the three amigos when I hut my brakes.

I bought a vacuum hose and connected it to the port on the passenger side of the upper intake, disconnected the hose just behind the MAF, and put a glove over that hose. I lit a cigar and blew until I was dizzy. Smoke came out in a very small amount where the breather hose meets the intake so I tightened that. Then it came out of the little box that I now know is called a CVS by the cruise controller. I disconnected the CVS and taped the end of that hose... and I found no more smoke. There is still a leak because the glove gets smaller and I still have the problem with the brakes, though I have clearly made it better.

I saw no smoke elsewhere in the engine compartment.

First, where else should I look?

Second, how do I know whether the CVS actually closes? As I understand it, it is normally opened.

Thanks!!!
