Default So the missus says to me......

"Why don't we get one of those big roof racks and some of those search lights I see on other peoples Discos.?"

I say, "sure."

I'm thinking "Wayhay..."

I've now got her all excited about rigging up a tent on top of the car and spending long summer weekends out in the wilds (read: slightly off the road, not too far from wifi and a shower.).

So, I'm looking out for a safari rack.

I've been scouring CL but I thought I'd pass the word in case something comes up when I'm not looking.

I'm looking at Hudson Valley, Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey, New York.

Also, what's the deal with a roof tent with ladder access that I see? Is that a particular product or have folk just leant a ladder against the car?

Cheers folks.

Oh, I know. I fully appreciate the good fortune I find myself with.

Almost like finding a bag of money. Almost.

That rack looks oddly, ... Odd. Doesn't look SD.

Looks like a DIY, decent attempt. And the radius tool he had made those rear curves.

I just saw the new price of a SD rack on rovers north. $2.2k /ouch /incredible.

SD racks seem to come up on D-web a little more often. Going rate for 2nd hand is usually about $1K. However, you'll probably want to go with Baja or Voyager if you're serious about a roof top tent setup. Or you can do like some have and cut the sides rails off the high part of the SD rack. I made mine removable. Otherwise your tent ends up pretty damn high off the roof and that much weight up high... well, every inch higher makes it like exponentially worse.

Check out Expedition Portal forums for all you want to know and more about the various RTT options. Pretty sure 4wheelparts is blowing out the Smittybilt version of the standard flip-out type for about $800.

My wife likes to camp from time to time, but has no interest in "sleeping on top of our car." I however like being able to crank up the hard shell with the bedding already in place and not deal with blowing up mattresses and wrestling with a tent in the f-ing dark. ...which is inevitably how it happens.

Ha. Sounds about right. I was thinking of just nailing a plank of plywood to the front. For further mpg reduction.....

What do you make of the Hannibal rack, as a tent holder?

Will check out those leads..

Thanks.
