Default Sounds like a Diesel

Hi all new to the forum and new to land rover ownership. Just bought a 03 Disco HSE with 75K on it. I made sure it was out of the VIN range for the oil pump issue but after reading all these threads sounds like ownership could be as daunting as it is enjoyable. I use the Disco for daily driving as well as camping in the White mountains and Maine. I've wanted one for a while so we will see.

My issue is that I have a knocking sound coming from the block, especially when its cold, once the truck warms up it goes away (mostly) unless I am accelerating. I have read a few threads seems to me that it could be multiple things and I am trying to get a little more specific as I am not a mechanic so will have to pay for most diagnistics and repairs.

I dropped the oil pan for a reseal and changed the oil. So was wondering if I used the wrong grade, seems that everyone talks about heavier grades and the manual allows for multiple as well.

How do i tell if its a rod bearing vs an oil pump or something else? Is there even a way to distinguish without mechanical work being done?

Basing my questions off what I have read so far so any advice would be appreciated. I would rather figure it out now and not have to pay for it later (or pay as much).

Thanks
Joe

so the noise started immediately after you changed the oil?

How bad is it?

The 4.6L engines have a longer stroke than the 4.0s, so they do not sound anywhere near as smooth.

I have often thought that my 4.6 sounds like a diesel sometimes. Also- i just put a brand new $5,500 block in, and the noise didn't change- so at least what I'm hearing, is absolutely normal.

Thanks for the responses...

Nite Train - I drove it home from the dealer and then immediately dropped the pan and changed the oil so I really don't have a good benchmark. I am not sure if I'm worried about it so I have been noticing it more but it definitely seems to have gotten worse.

Disco2fever - When you first start the car its pretty noticable, as the engine warms is goes relatively quiet unless I am accelerating.

Just read a few more posts, i have NOT been putting premium gas in the truck been using middle grade, do you think that it could be causing this as well or contributing to it?

LOL, yeah, that's probably your problem. For the record though... the 4.0L and the 4.6L DO sound quite a bit different. I've got both, and I love the way the 4.0 sounds.

I used to work at a LR dealer in '03-'04 and can tell you that if I went to start a row of discos it would sound like WWII. I would use everyones advice to r/o a mechanical problem (bc that is out of my realm of knowledge), but that is exactly how they drive/sound, especially when cold. Once they warmup the idle settles down quite a bit.

PS. Anyone know why I can't PM?

Hey Reg- you're going to hear some good advice from a lot of guys how to clean your system out, too. If the previous owner was using crappy fuel, you will want to do whatever they say to have the carbon build-up removed.

I think dirtier fuel burns hotter or something, and they eventually can ruin these engines... or something. Buying premium costs a lot less than voting for a socialist- so keep voting for capitalists and you'll be fine.
