Default Spark Plug Confusion

Hey guys,

I'm trying to locate 8 "Bosch Platinum Plus 4's" for each of my Discos- a 2004 and a 2000.

The problem is, my Autozone says that there is actually two different spark plug part numbers for each- two for the 4.0 and two for the 4.6.

He says both vary by a couple inches of displacement, and BOTH (for each engine) accept different kinds of plugs, according to the 8th digit in the VIN:

The 2000 4.0 Liter is different based whether the 8th digit is a 2 or a 5, and the 2004 is based on whether the 8th digit is a 4 or a 9.

Anybody know the story behind this?

More importantly... what Bosh Platty Plus 4's do I need to buy for each Disco??

Thanks guys...

Just use the parts store recommondations for each engine.
I used them for years on my 99 but since switched to the new Fusion, which was a mistake, so I don't remember the old number.
Are you also changing out your plug wires?

Yessir! I actually just got my first shipment of your 60k maint stuff, which included two sets of Magencor 8mm wires! All I have to do now is get the plugs.

Do you still think those Bosh plugs are the best?

I just popped in the new air filters, and I'm off to get some SeaFoam to try induction cleaning. What a perfect day and weather to be working on my Disco.

I love it!

LRRF lists Bosch Platty +4 4418 plugs for both vehicles.

Okay- my local AutoZone has eleven Platinum +4's in part number 4418.

I had them check the part against the year and VIN, and they said that it DOES list the 4418s as an option for the 2000 D2... but NOT for the 2004- it didn't list any of their BOSH plugs as options.

Guys- would I be safe putting these 4418s into my Disco, regardless of what the AutoZone PC says?

Or should I wait?

THANKS!

Pat

I recommend Iridium plugs, but thats just me.
The different part number is if you have secondary air injection or not.
I do NOT know what plug number is for each truck.
YOur 2000 may have SAI and the 2004 may not have it.
Go to www.atlanticbritish.com, tech page and look up "do I have SAI"

Thanks Mike!

I just went and looked:

http://www.roverparts.com/TechTips/a...tionengine.cfm

And the 2000 does not have the Second injection, but the 2004 does indeed have it.

Every engine is different but I know the +4s are doing great in my 97. Some engines operate well with the +4s and others don't like anything but cheap copper plugs. LRRF does have a note recommending not to use the +4s with the OE wires. I would recommend upgrading to Magnecor wires if you haven't been so already.

As for the review from Discoweb, it sounds to me like the guy half arsed his tune up then made it worse with the seafoam cleaning. I pretty much ignore everything I read on Discoweb. There is more griping and ridiculing that goes on at that site than actually helping.
