Hi,

I have a 2000 Discovery II SD and today I notoced that my sport mode doesn't appear to be working.

If I push the switch in the light on the dash does not illuminate.

When I check the light before starting it lights during the test phase.

My CEL is not on and I hooked up my scanner and have no codes at all.

Any suggestions on what I can look for? A fuse or maybe a connecter on the transmission?

Start by having your battery and alternator tested, the DII transmission is electonically controlled and when the trucks voltage starts to get low the trans ECU is the first one to get its power cut.
Any autoparts store can do this test for free.

 

First time I have heard of that as being a problem. Try something, put your t/case in low range then see if your manual mode works.

Spike......I will have the voltage checked out ASAP.

Mike.......I do not get the "M" lit up when in low range.

One other fact from today, I had to take the wife into town and noticed that when I started the truck the "S" light was lit but the switch was in the "out" position which should have meant that the sport mode was off.

When I pushed the switch in the light went out and stayed out whether the switch was in or out for the rest of the trip.

Sure seems like an electrical issue either as Spike indicated or with the switch itself.

Is there a connection on the transmission that should also be checked for grease or oil and cleaned up?

Before you go looking for electrical connections lets get the voltage tested, start simple and cheap, then work our way up from there.

Sorry for the delay in getting back.

I had the battery and altenator checked out and they appear to be functioning properly.

If I put the truck into 4 low and push the sport mode button I DO NOT get manual mode.

Same thing when trying to put it into sport mode.

I am not getting any codes and the truck is running great.

One side note, for the last 3 tankfuls I have had an increase in gas milage from 14 to 16 mpg.

The increase has occured at the same time the sport mode switch stopped working.

I'm sure this is coincidental but I figured I would mention it.

Any thoughts on what to look for next? Bad switch or electrical connection at the transmission?

I'm planning a camping trip towing my popup (3,000 lbs) for the 4th of July and would like to have the sport mode available.

Any help would be appriciated.

A couple of DIY checks in "hope" it helps.........

It may just be the switch is dirty or not connected properly,

its a long shot, but carefully unclip the gearlever surround and lift in an upwards direction. at the back of the surround is where the sport mode switch plugs in, ensure its connected / all tight etc.

Failing that, the XYZ switch on the side of the gearbox is likely to be the culprit. The drains from the aircon system drip onto the switch, corrode the dam thing and then it gives you problems like your encountering.

Again, a long shot...........it may just be the connection TO the XYZ position switch is drity / corroded. Crawl underneath level with the drivers seat, look up on the side of the box where the auto select cable connects to a switch on the side of the gearbox, there you will see an electrical connector to, Disconnect it and check it looks clean and corrosion free.

Its also worth while moving the auto lever through all the gear positions several times "quicker" than you would when selecting gear, do this with ignition OFF and ON, it "can" help clean up the internal connections of the switch if the aircon drips is the culprit.

If all that fails, its a trip to have the Gearbox ECU diagnosed by a Rover specialist or Dealer Im afraid.

 

Let us know what you find and don't worry about towing the trailer, if you are in the mountains and need power just shift into 3rd gear.

 

Sport modes sucks gas because it holds the up shifts longer so you spin more engine rpm to get that "sporty" feel.
