Default Sprucing up an run down Disco II

Hi All,

I am brand new to this forum. Picked up a 2002 disco last night and I am excited to jump in. I was wondering what ideas you all have about freshening up this rig. I have 85,000 miles on it. it doesnt leak and the head gaskets were just done. It seems to vibrate a bit and wander a bit with the stock tires. Are bushings a good Idea?...swaybars bushings and maybe steering dampener?...want this thing to feel new again. Where should I start?

Thanks!!!

Slow down and take a deep breath first.
Look at my service list, 2nd from the top on the Disco section and do everything except the stuff just done as part of the head gasket repair.
Get your front drive shaft rebuilt to correct the lack of grease fittings.
What tires do you have 18 or 16 inch, how bad are they warn? Air then up to 40 all the way around and get them balance if necessary.
Your suspension is warn out so shocks, coils and a new stabilizer will be in order when you can.
Chances of a D2 needing bushings are slim, but possibel.

I always start with new fluids, then belts and hoses, then tune up, but you need to address problems first, then work on preventive maintence.

Assuming money permits, shouldn't you do both in tadem with each other, so nothing new breaks on you while your fixing whats wrong? Just curious

Depends on your budget, if you need tires then get tires and change fluids later.
If all you need is a steering damper then by all means start on the other stuff.

Example:when I bought my truck it needed a thermostat, tune up, fluids changed, cruise fixed, etc.
I did a oil change first, then t-stat, then fixed the cruise, then tune up, then fluids, belt and hoses when I did the t-stat as the coolant was already drained so why do that twice?
But In think you get my point, problems first, then other things and NEVER assume that the previous owner did anything to this truck, assume that they never even changed the oil, unless you did it/had it done it was not done.

Hi Mike,
I have the 18 inch rims and tires look good...are 18's more prone to wandering?

18's don't hold up well or offer much traction off road.
Make sure you do something with that drive shaft, remember $4000 to $5000 to repair the damaged caused when it fails.

Eeek...Didnt realize they had that kind of issues with the drive shaft. Is it just new U-joints or do they have to rebuild the whole shaft?

Ujoints AND Centering ball kit!!!!! DO IT NOW! Especially with your mileage. Do a search here for "D2 front driveshaft"
