If you have center locking differential capability you can remove the driveshaft and just run the rear.
Or vice a versa

Discovery II has a timing chain.

With a 03 pulling the shaft and seeing if the noise is gone is out unless you installed a CDL transfer case. Unfortunately I don't have any spare DII shafts laying around.

When are you heading back home?

driveshaft
cv joint
hub
sticky caliper
are possibilities. the first could make for a bad trip. the other 3..... should be to notice if it is coming from one side or the other. cv sound usually changes with turning, but not always. brake noise also usually changes with braking

It starts out like a grinding when driving slow then like a belt sq when you speed up

if it is a grinding bearing (hub) you should be able to jack up either corner and hand spin test. neutral and spin. then again that much grinding would more than likely give you abs codes for a crazy sensor.

if your centering ball on the driveshaft is making that much noise, i would think a vibration would accompany it.........it doesn't have to, though. same with output bearing.

you really want to rule out the driveshaft possibility first.......that can be tested the same way but with both axles on stands.
