Default Squealing

Hello friends!

My 2004 Disco sometimes squealing when I first start it, especially if it's moist out (foggy) or cold. It SOUNDS like a water pump bearing or something, but it goes away after a few minutes, and it doesn't always do it.

I'm about to start doing some serious online ordering for Mike's famous 60k mile maintenance, and I'd like get to the bottom of this. I'll be putting a new serpentine belt on... maybe that will help?

I've tried isolating the sound, but I can't...

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate them! THANK YOU!

Need to check the idler pullies and the belt tensioner along with the belt. One or all of them are probably causing the noise. How many miles on the belt and on the engine?

Thanks Mike!

The engine has about 39,000 miles, and I'm sure the belt is the same.

But, I just ordered a new belt yesterday, as part of your 60k miles maintenance- so maybe that will help?

Thank you!

Pat

Disco2Fever, I think I might have a similar problem. I hear a really high pitched squeeling. I can only hear it inside the cab, windows up, and without the radio on. I just had my oil changed an hour ago, and asked the mechanic to listen in, he didn't hear it, but there was a lot of ambient noise. Its very faint, and it seems to go away when I'm pushing on the gas (or maybe it just drowns the noise) but as soon as I come to a stop, I can hear it again. It's not a steady stone..it deviates...it almost sounds like a really high pitch and fast morse code. Could this have something to do with my power steering?

I have a similar problem, and I'm still trying to figure it out. I've replaced my waterpump, alternator, pulleys, tensioner, belt, and now the A/C Condenser bearing. So far, nothing has stopped it, and it's been impossible for me to pinpoint.

Now, in my case, some of the repairs were necessary, and I don't feel bad about it, but it is absolutely driving me crazy. If I were to go back, when this all started, I would have brought it into a shop to diagnose when I couldn't figure it out.

So, my thought is, that unless you can pinpoint an obviously bad bearing or belt accessory take it in for a diagnosis.

I just replaced the power steering fluid, and added some of the Lucas stop leak......... .....no change. I'm going to keep searching.
