Default Starter

My '97 discovery is having trouble starting. Sometimes it starts right away and runs fine, other times it just does nothing-doesn't even try to turn over. The battery was replaced about two months ago- it seemed to help for a bit. The battery is still holding a charge (headlights don't dim when trying to start)- so although that was an issue, its not the problem now.The starter seems to have more trouble when its hot.... ?
I tried to remove the starter yesterday, but like all things land rover- this is more difficult than one would expect. Any ideas of things I should try testing before removing? Any tips on how to remove it? The starter isn't attached with bolts (as the diagram in the online manual shows) ...
Please help.

Default Starter/distributor/ignition?

I've been thinking a bit more- perhaps its not the starter at all. The problem startinghas been happening randomly for the last few months. The "check engine" light has been on since I purchased the car in Oct. I've recently towed it from CA to NY. Twice before leaving CA the car stayed on after I had turned the key to the off position- then turned off when I turned off the lights- making mewonder whatelectrical issuesunrelated to starting it has. When it feels like starting it starts strong and runs well. When it doesn't- it doesn't click over at all- just flat. The car seems to have most trouble when its been driven, turned off, then hasn't had a chance to completely cool--- butif left overnight it starts- usually without hesitation.
Any suggestions???

I would start by pulling the codes and figuring out why your check engine light is on. It may be related, may not. Either way it's a fair place to start. The fact that it kept running after you turned it off is very interesting and definitly suggests an electrical issue. How many miles are on it?

How many miles on this starter, have you had a shop do an amp draw test on the starter to see how many amps it is requiring? May be time for a new one?
