Default Stating problem/rough idle

My truck will sometimes not start when I turn the ignition,it will just keep cranking. It will eventually start after I turn off the ignition and try a few times. It does not do this all the time, just every now and then. Also, somtimes when i start it it idles erradically, and when I keep a constant pressure on the fuel pedal it will search, fluctuating rpm between 1200 and 500,then if I let off the pedal it will die,it also does not do this every time but happens alot it seems. There is no engine light on or anything.Any ideas on what it is?

!996 Land Rover Discovery 157k miles, all service and maitenance performed up to 125k.I have just bought this truck 2 weeks ago.

at first I was thinking idle control solenoid but if there are no error codes maybe not..try running some seaform through it and see if that helps.

The no idle is your stepper motor, that is what controls your idle speed.
The no start I would guess your crank sensor. Replace your stepper motor first.

You can first try removing the stepper motor and cleaning it with a can of carb cleaner, sometimes that works.

Sorry, it is on the throttle body. Look at the pic in the link and match it up with what is on the trk.

Thanks Spike. When I was looking for the stepper motor I noticed 2 vacum lines just hanging out by themselves. They are not connected to anything up top or capped off. They are on the pass side of the engine compartment near the firewall and where all the spark plug wires are mounted.Any idea wtf these are?

Are they coming out of the fire wall and not connected to the engine? Or the other way around?

They lead back toward the firewall and passenger compartment. And are not connected to the engine.

Golf tee's work great for that. You will need to find what they go to.
