Default Stealership Problems

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2000 Disco II, I took it in to have the 60,000 mile service performed. 2.5 days later they call and tell me that they have not done the 60,000 mile service because the car has greater issues. They claim they found head gaskets and front timing cover leaking coolant and oil. Wants to charge $3100.00 to fix of which they tell me $900.00 is part related. The car is not visibly leaking any fluids nor is it running hot. The car was a lease we are the second owners and the same dealership has perform all the routine and scheduled maintenance only. Car has only 65,000 miles on it. Does this sound right?

No, it does not sound right. I would take it to another shop and tell them that you are looking to buy and that you want them to look it over, head to toe.
If they come up with the same thing...but the dealer shouldnt have taken two days.

Where are you from?
There is a chance you have a rover shop in your area thats NOT the dealership.
They tend to be much more honest and wont throw parts at you that you dont need.
This situation seems a little fishy to me....Dont be afraid to play hardball with Land Rover, sometimes you just have to show them you mean business. Good luck

I had a similar thing happen with the Cincinnati dealer, and this is not the first of this sort of thing I have read about here. My experience with other brands has not been this blatantly dishonest so it makes me wonder if this is a typical LR tactic or just another sign of the times.

Check out some of these places, they may not be close to you but they are in the St. Louis area. Also, any foreign car place is a good option, they tend to know a thing or two about LR's.

British Cars of America, LLC
2338 N. Lindbergh Blvd.
St. Louis, MO 63114

Plaza Land Rover (A dealership, but they may be helpful)

Doesn't really mather who gives you the bad news, the important part is to find a place that you will learn to really trust before stopping having second and third opinion.

If there is no bad news to be given is what you need to find out first. If you can find a shop that knows your Land Rover, and you know they will never try fool you and do a quality job, thats the place you need to be. If its the dealership so be it, but if you go to one of these places such as the ones I listed and they tell you that there is no problem... Never walk through the doors of that dealership again.

Do a pressure check on your coolant system, also are you losing any coolant? Is your oil milky or foamy looking? Is your tail pipe spitting any mist out of it(water coolant)?

Save yourself some money and do some simple checks yourself first.

As far as price they gave you it only sounds about $350 to high, I don't
know what the labor rate is in your area.

Good luck.

Not all dealers are out to take you for a ride.
