Default steering went "out" help please...

have been feeling the steering get softer over the last couple days.I am 90% sure its the p/s pump, but i could really use some second/third opinions here as it takes a week for parts to come here to me and I would prefer to be right the first time. 99 disco SD, 75k)

level was a little low and when i added fluid it sucked up a little as i would expect initially but then

when i tried to turn to the stops there was no change in the reservoir level at all.

at the stops there is a loud whirring noise with a slight wurble to it. but only at the stops.

the wheels turn all the way and do so consistently but there is almost no resistance in the wheel.

there dont appear to be any leaks.

Your only choice before replacing the pump is to totally flush the system, about 4 quarts of p/s fluid and add a can of Lucas when topping off the system when done. This will either clear up the problem, or you are looking at a new pump.
How mechanical are you?

Default I would say fairly mechanical

I have had apart almost every car i have ever own... busted my audi a4 down to parade rest many times... and have ripped apart the front end of a zf auto tranny a few times.... That said.... I am not so arrogant as to think just because I have done this.... that "that" will be easy.... Im aware im into a new animal with the rover
