Default power steering went out--'03 Discovery

Very cold in NE Ohio. Anyway, For one day my power steering sounded like a '72 Chrysler's power steering...lots of high pitched squealing. Now it's gone: both the noise AND the power steering. Everything else is ok, incl. power brakes. No warning lights, nothing.
Questions:
1) Can I drive a Discovery without the power steering without further damge to the vehicle? I drove it home when it died and it's not easy, but it's do-able.
2) What could it be? Fluid levels look good.

sounds like your power steering pump gave out. check out the rave manual for the process on replacing it (you'll need to replace the pump and then bleed the system properly; both fairly easy to do).

as for driving it without pas, don't know.

guys, what do you think?

You can get a used power steering pump from autosports unlimited for $70 shipped with the pulley.

Do not drive it till you verify what is wrong. Is your p/s fluid still churning in the bottle, when did you last service it last.

If the pump went out yes you can drive it.
If the pump has run dry then no, you cannot drive it.
If you (or somebody else) added power steering stop leak it will clog the system when it gets cold if there is to much stop leak in the system.
It gets to thick and cant pump.

Default pulling my power steering pump on 03 disco

I've taken off the ac, the belt and the pulley. I've got the two bolts out of the front of the steering pump and the nut off. How do you get the stud out the nut was on?

Had this exact problem... you kinda have to twist and pull its way out. Try not to damage the fan. The ideal route to go would be to remove the fan and that would give you plenty of room to slide it out.

The diagram I have makes it look like the stud goes out the back, and why would it have a nut on the front if it comes out the front?
